A police investigation is underway after an Indian tour guide alleged that she was gang-raped at a five-star hotel in Delhi.
The hotel is situated near India Gate and the victim said that she was attacked by five men and a woman on Friday, September 18, 2020.
After identifying the suspects, the police launched an investigation and the main accused was arrested.
A man named Manoj Sharma, a resident of Delhi’s Sheikh Sarai area, was arrested and detained.
Officers explained that the woman alerted the police a day after being attacked.
According to reports, the hotel room in question had been booked by two businessmen.
The victim works as a tourist guide and ticket booking executive.
She told police that she was in desperate need of money when she met two of the accused. They claimed that they could give her a loan at a low rate and invited her to the hotel.
However, upon entering the room, the Indian tour guide was attacked and allegedly raped by five men and one woman.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, Eish Singhal said:
“On the victim’s complaint, a case was registered against six accused persons including one woman.
“The victim was lured to the hotel room on the pretext of providing a loan at subsidised rates by the accused persons.
“The victim worked as tourist guide-cum-ticket booking agent and she was in dire need of money.”
“The room was booked under the name of two business persons.”
It was reported that the victim was left in the hotel room while the suspects fled.
Police have registered a case and while they have arrested Sharma, searches for the other accused are on.
In another incident, a woman had been out for dinner with a male colleague at a hotel. However, as they walked towards their car, a man approached them asking for directions.
As the woman and her friend spoke to him, five more men surrounded them and began harassing them.
They then brandished weapons and forced them into their car.
The woman told police: “Six men started misbehaving with us. Later, they brandished a pistol and forced us into their car.”
The suspects drove to various places across the city as well as isolated areas. During this time, the men took turns to rape the woman.
The victims were also robbed during the night-long ordeal.
