Her mother found out about the marriage and was not happy.
On Friday, May 22, 2020, police arrested an Indian mother for the murder of her daughter and son-in-law. Police also arrested the woman’s nephew and his friend.
The incident happened in the town of Tarn Taran in Punjab.
It had been an ongoing investigation since May 10 when the two bodies were discovered in a field.
It was revealed to be a case of honour killing as the woman did not approve of her daughter’s love marriage.
According to Superintendent Jagjit Singh, Jyoti Rani had a love affair with a young man named Jugraj Singh. They ended up getting married.
Despite being married for several months, Jyoti continued to live at her maternal home as the marriage had been in secret.
Her mother found out about the marriage and was not happy about it. Despite her not approving of the marriage, Jyoti regularly met with Jugraj.
On May 9, the couple decided to run away from their homes.
Jyoti’s mother knew where they would be and planned to take extreme action. She enlisted the help of her nephew Gurbhej Singh and his friend Gursavek Singh to kill the couple.
Later that day, the two men found the couple and invited them into their house.
The couple accepted their invite, however, when inside the house, they were poisoned. Following the double murder, both bodies were dumped in a field.
The murders came to light on May 10 when officers found the two bodies. In addition, they also found a vial of poison.
Jyoti’s mother was suspected to be responsible after Kulwant Singh, father of Jugraj, raised doubts over the family.
Based on his statement, a case of murder was registered against the Indian mother. However, due to a lack of evidence, the accused could not be arrested.
During the investigation, police discovered that the victims were poisoned shortly after entering a house which belonged to Gurbhej and Gursavek.
Due to this piece of information, officers linked the mother to the crime and on May 22, the trio were arrested.
Following the arrests, the three suspects reportedly confessed to murder. They were presented in court where they admitted to the crime before being remanded in custody.
In a similar case, a family was arrested for killing a family member after not approving of her boyfriend.
They had beaten her with a stick before strangling her to death.
They lied to officers in an attempt to divert suspicions, however, they were arrested.
