"Trupti collapsed and died on the spot."
A 21-year-old woman was shot dead by her father at a wedding ceremony in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, for eloping and marrying against her family’s wishes.
Trupti Wagh, who was four months pregnant, was killed on April 26, 2025, while attending the haldi ceremony of her sister-in-law.
She and Avinash Wagh married in March 2024 despite opposition from Trupti’s family.
Avinash’s mother Priyanka said: “She was shot in the chest. When Avinash ran to protect her, he was shot too. Trupti collapsed and died on the spot.”
Avinash is recovering in Pune’s Sassoon Hospital after undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds.
He doesn’t know his wife is dead. Instead, he has been told that Trupti is at her mother’s house and will visit him soon.
Trupti’s father, Kiran Mangle, a retired CRPF sub-inspector, allegedly entered the mandap where the ceremony was being held and fired two shots in the air before aiming at his daughter.
Police arrived shortly after the incident and rescued Kiran from a crowd that had begun beating him. He is undergoing treatment in Jalgaon.
Investigating Officer Jitendra Valte said: “Trupti’s father is undergoing treatment in Jalgaon.
“We will charge him with her murder and the attempted murder of Avinash. A search is underway for Kiran’s son, Nikhil Mangle, who was present at the scene.”
Priyanka, a nurse who raised her children alone after her husband’s death 16 years ago, said her son fell in love with Trupti while living with relatives near Shirpur.
She explained: “My sister-in-law lives near Shirpur (around 100 km from Jalgaon).
“I had left Avinash with her when he was very young for his education. She was a widow and looked after him well. Trupti was my sister-in-law’s granddaughter. That’s where the love story started.”
The families reportedly belonged to the same caste. However, police believe class and educational differences triggered the conflict.
While Trupti was studying to become a doctor at Dr D Y Patil Homoeopathic Medical College in Pune, Avinash worked as a cleaner in a Pune-based multinational company after finishing school.
Priyanka had warned Trupti to reconsider the relationship.
“But Trupti was adamant. She said, ‘I have dated your son and, now, you are asking me to leave him. If I marry, it will be with him.”
Priyanka described Trupti as headstrong and fearless:
“She did not seem to be afraid of anything. My son was poor, so he was quiet. He would barely argue. It was Trupti who made plans.”
Police say Kiran Mangle had invested heavily in his daughter’s education. He had extended his service beyond retirement to support her studies.
Valte continued: “He has told us that he had many dreams for Trupti.
“He was going to retire in 2017, but took an extension so that his daughter could complete her studies. He spent several lakhs to get her admitted to D Y Patil in Pune and even took loans.
“Kiran told us that he regretted what he had done, but also felt a sense of peace.”
According to police, the accused felt betrayed and humiliated by his daughter’s decision to marry outside his expectations.
When Trupti fell pregnant for the first time, her family forced her to undergo an abortion.
She said:
“She told me that they beat her up and forced her to undergo an abortion. Her family did not want the child.”
“She returned home after the abortion (in November 2024). She would cry endlessly for their baby.”
The Waghs were looking forward to better days and Trupti fell pregnant shortly after.
Ahead of the wedding, Trupti applied mehendi to Priyanka’s hands.
On the morning of the tragedy, spirits were high.
Priyanka said: “From morning itself, Trupti was scolding me for talking too much. She told me, ‘Keep quiet, Mummy, and sit’.”
Now, as she waits for her son to heal, Priyanka is determined to fight for justice:
“I will start a protest. I will do whatever it takes to ensure justice for Trupti.
“Every person responsible for the attack, including provoking it, will have to answer (for their actions).
“My struggle will spread awareness that everybody should respect love. If we don’t allow love, how will we live?”
