"Because of their love, I have come this far."
Veteran Bangladeshi actress Farida Akhtar Babita has been selected for the 2026 Ekushey Padak, dedicating the honour to late filmmaker Zahir Raihan.
The list of Ekushey Padak recipients was announced on February 5, 2026, recognising nine individuals and one institution this year.
Reacting soon after the announcement, Babita expressed joy at receiving the state honour, even though it arrived later in life.
The Ashani Sanket star described the moment as deeply emotional, especially because the award comes during Language Month.
Babita reflected on the recognition she has received, saying:
“I am very happy, very delighted. I am extremely happy.”
She added that receiving the Ekushey Padak during Language Month felt like the greatest achievement of her entire career.
For Babita, the honour carries special meaning as it celebrates both her artistic journey and Bangladesh’s cultural heritage.
She also extended heartfelt gratitude to the government for conferring the prestigious award upon her contributions to acting.
Babita acknowledged her colleagues from the film industry, saying their support shaped her long and enduring career.
She credited journalists for playing an important role throughout her professional life, offering them love and appreciation.
While sharing her emotions, Babita said the first person she thought of after hearing the news was her only son.
Babita revealed she spent many years living in Canada and continues to miss her son deeply despite returning home.
The actress also spoke about the happiness shared by her family, including her sisters, Champa and Suchanda.
She said congratulatory calls have poured in from relatives living both in Bangladesh and abroad.
“Champa and Suchanda apa are happy. Everyone is telling me on the phone that I must treat them to sweets.”
Reflecting on her decorated career, Babita noted she has received numerous national and international awards.
She recalled winning the National Film Award multiple times, along with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Bangladesh.
Her work has also been honoured in Kolkata and several other countries over the years.
Babita mentioned that the Mayor of Dallas once gave her a lifetime honour and even declared a ‘Babita Day’.
Despite these achievements, she said the Ekushey Padak stands above every other recognition she has received.
“The Ekushey Padak has surpassed all my other awards.”
She described her lifelong dedication to acting as a journey filled with public love and emotional fulfilment.
Babita concluded by expressing gratitude to the people of Bangladesh, saying their affection carried her this far.
She said: “My love to all the people of the country. Because of their love, I have come this far.”
