"Our priority remains providing support to the women"
Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed.
The charges relate to allegations made by three separate women, with the reported incidents taking place between 2021 and 2022.
Partey is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2025.
Jaswant Narwal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS, said:
“The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised the prosecution of Thomas Partey for multiple counts of rape, after carefully reviewing a comprehensive file of evidence.
“Our prosecutors have worked closely with officers in the Metropolitan Police who have carried out the investigation, to review the evidence and advise on the appropriate charges.
“We remind everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.
“We know there will be significant public interest in this announcement, but it is absolutely vital that there is no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
The charges follow an investigation by detectives, which started in February 2022 after police first received a report of rape.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, said:
“Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.
“We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team. You can contact detectives about this investigation by emailing [email protected]”
Partey, born in Krobo Odumase, Ghana, in June 1993, began his professional football career in Spain.
He joined Atlético Madrid in 2012 and made his senior debut in 2015 after loan spells at Mallorca and Leganés.
He made 188 appearances for Atlético, winning the Europa League in 2018 and La Liga in 2021.
In October 2020, he moved to Arsenal after the Premier League club triggered his £45 million release clause. Partey signed a four-year deal as manager Mikel Arteta sought to reshape his squad.
During his time in North London, Partey became a central figure in midfield.
He played 33 matches in the 2022-23 season as Arsenal finished second behind Manchester City.
The following season, he was limited to 14 appearances due to a hamstring injury, but still contributed as the club once again finished runners-up to City.
Partey enjoyed a strong final campaign, making 52 appearances in all competitions. Arsenal finished second to Liverpool in the league and reached the semi-finals of both the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.
His contract with Arsenal ended on June 30, 2025.
At international level, Thomas Partey has earned 53 caps for Ghana and scored 15 goals.
