"If she crosses my son, she's a dead woman."
In the BBC’s EastEnders, Vinny Panesar’s (Shiv Jalota) world will soon turn upside down.
The young businessman is currently going all out to be there for his girlfriend, Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine), who recently discovered that she is pregnant.
Vinny believes that he is the father of Penny’s unborn child and has been desperately trying to convince his mother, Suki Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal), to accept Penny.
Suki is adamant that her son is too good for Penny and that the latter is a gold-digger, only interested in the Panesar empire.
In the episode available to stream on BBC iPlayer on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, it appeared that Vinny and Penny were making some headway.
Suki arrived for lunch with the Brannings, but when she and her wife, Eve Panesar-Unwin (Heather Peace), left, Suki told her:
“[Penny]’s safe for now, but if she crosses my son, she’s a dead woman.”
This may be a foreshadowing of what is to come in EastEnders, as Penny and Vinny will experience a devastating turn of events.
As the day of Penny’s first baby scan dawns, Vinny has to give it a miss due to a meeting with a potential investor for Penny’s shop.
Alone at the scan, Penny is stunned when the nurse informs her that her pregnancy is more advanced than she thought.
Initially, Penny keeps this development from Vinny when he arrives to support her.
She later confides in her cousins, Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) and Oscar Branning (Pierre Counihan-Moullier).
Penny emotionally admits that if it is not Vinny, than the father of her child could be Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway), as they were intimate just before Harry went into rehab.
After Penny has another altercation with Suki, Harry’s mother, Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington) steps in to defend the market trader.
Actress Laura says: “From Nicola’s perspective, she’s simply trying to speak with Penny when Suki interrupts, which infuriates her!
“Her opinion of Suki is already low, given the recent issues involving Ravi and Harry.
“With Penny in the early stages of pregnancy, Nicola understands the anxieties that come with that experience.
“She also has a soft spot for Penny, who has supported Harry throughout his recent rehabilitation.”
But when Harry confides in Nicola that his girlfriend, Gina Knight (Francesca Henry), does not want children, Nicola works out the truth.
She later declares that if Penny doesn’t take a DNA test, she will tell Vinny and Harry everything.
Laura continued: “Nicola wants clarity as soon as possible on whether the baby is Harry’s.
“She’s incredibly protective over him and carries guilt about what he has been through.”
“She also feels she has fallen short as a mother, so if the baby is his, she wants to support him from the outset.”
However, these events will also lead to trauma for Nicola, as she is pregnant with George Knight’s (Colin Salmon) baby.
EastEnders recently confirmed an issue-led storyline where Nicola gives birth prematurely.
If Penny’s baby is fathered by Harry, how will Vinny deal with the inevitable upheaval this will bring?
And how will formidable mum Suki react? Will Penny become a target?
EastEnders airs this drama from Monday, March 30, 2026, on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
