Leyton Orient have signed winger Dilan Markanday on loan from Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old spent the first half of the 2024/25 season on loan at League Two side Chesterfield, where he scored seven goals and provided three assists in 24 appearances.

Assistant manager Danny Webb had confirmed Markanday had been recalled from his loan:

“Dilan is a tough one. At the minute he is not with us. I won’t go too much into that, the supporters probably want a little bit of clarity on it all.

“When you do take these lads on loan and they do well and they don’t belong to you, there is always a little bit of muddy water and a bit of confusion in that period between the crossover between them either coming back again and going back to their parent club.

“But as it stands, he is not with us.”

Markanday has now joined League One’s play-off chasing Leyton Orient.

He attended Orient’s FA Cup victory over Derby County on January 14 and said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to have joined the club.

“I’ve had some real positive conversations with the gaffer and Martin Ling, and it’s a club that is in a really good place at the moment.

“I had a really good loan spell at Chesterfield in the first half of the season, which I’m really grateful for, but now I’m really excited to step up a league and prove what I can do.

“Orient play a really nice brand of football and recent results have been great, and it’s a style of play I think my skillset can settle into well.

“Everyone at the club is looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Manager Richie Wellens expressed his delight in signing Dilan Markanday:

“Dilan is a player that we’ve liked for a while, and we’re really pleased to have him on board.

“He’s a really exciting player, and one we are really happy to have join us for the rest of the season.

“He impressed at Chesterfield during his time there, and we had to fight off a lot of competition to get him here.

“We’ve had a few injuries in our wide positions of late, so bringing in Dilan is something that we are thrilled with.”

“After playing 24 games so far this season, he feels it’s the best condition he’s ever been in, and that he feels fit, sharp and is ready to add to the squad.”

Dilan Markanday came through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur and made his senior debut in October 2021 in a UEFA Europa Conference League fixture versus Vitesse.

He joined Blackburn Rovers in January 2022, and to date has made 35 appearances for the Lancashire club, scoring four times.

Markanday is in line to make his Leyton Orient debut against Peterborough on January 18.
