The PS5 sits in the sweet spot.
Grand Theft Auto VI is nearly here, but for players without a current-generation console, there is one expensive question to answer first: which console is best for GTA VI?
Rockstar Games will release the game on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
That gives players four current-generation options, with the PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S offering different levels of power and price.
GTA VI has been primarily advertised as a PS5 title, with Rockstar Games even stating that the Extended Look was captured on the Sony console.
For most players, the standard PS5 is the obvious choice for GTA VI. It has Rockstar’s clearest official endorsement, while Xbox Series X remains a powerful alternative and the cheaper Series S is also confirmed for launch.
PS5 Pro is the more interesting option for players who want the best possible technical experience, although Rockstar has not yet explained exactly what its enhancements will mean.
So, which console should GTA VI players actually buy?
Is PS5 or Xbox Series X Better?
On paper, this looks like a much closer contest than the PlayStation recommendation might suggest.
Both PS5 and Xbox Series X are powerful current-generation consoles, and Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI for both.
There is currently no official performance comparison showing that one standard console will deliver a substantially better version of the game.
The PS5 nevertheless has something Xbox does not: Rockstar is explicitly using it to showcase the upcoming game.
The Extended Look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PS5. Rockstar’s official GTA VI website also carries a “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” message.
That does not mean Xbox Series X players should expect a noticeably worse game. It simply gives PS5 the strongest official case for anyone buying a console specifically for Grand Theft Auto VI.
There is also the question of what players actually want from their console.
Someone already invested in Xbox does not suddenly need to abandon the platform because GTA VI is coming to PS5. Series X remains a premium machine and GTA VI is officially confirmed for it.
The Series S is a different proposition.
It is less powerful than Series X, but owners will still be able to play GTA VI when it is out.
That makes it the cheapest confirmed route into the game, although players should not expect it to match the more powerful consoles visually.
Rockstar has yet to reveal the detailed resolution or performance targets for the Series S.
For someone buying a console only for GTA VI, the Series S therefore makes sense as a budget option rather than a performance choice.
The PS5 sits in the sweet spot.
It offers the hardware Rockstar has used to demonstrate the game, without requiring buyers to gamble on whether the considerably more expensive PS5 Pro will deliver enough of an improvement to justify the extra cost.
There is another reason to consider the PS5: GTA VI makes extensive use of its hardware features.
PlayStation says the game will use the PS5’s high-speed SSD for fast loading, while its DualSense controller will provide haptic feedback and adaptive trigger effects.
Those features will not transform GTA VI on their own, but they could make the PS5 version feel particularly well integrated with the hardware.
The game itself costs the same on PlayStation and Xbox in the UK, with the Standard Edition priced at £69.99 and the Ultimate Edition at £89.99.
For most players, then, there is little reason to spend more on the game simply because they choose one console over the other.
Is PS5 Pro Worth Buying?
This is where things get more interesting.
GTA VI is officially PS5 Pro Enhanced, so Sony’s upgraded console is not simply being ignored by Rockstar. However, that label alone does not tell players exactly what they are getting.
Rockstar has not yet provided detailed GTA VI performance specifications for PS5 Pro. There is therefore no solid basis for promising a particular resolution or frame rate.
That makes the PS5 Pro a difficult recommendation based on GTA VI alone.
Players who already want the most powerful PlayStation hardware have an obvious reason to consider it.
Those buying a console specifically for GTA VI, however, may be better served by waiting for Rockstar to reveal exactly what the Pro version improves.
It is also an expensive investment, with the PS5 Pro costing around £789.
There is also no reason to assume that the standard PS5 will provide a poor experience.
Quite the opposite: Rockstar used it for its major gameplay showcase and explicitly said GTA VI plays best on PS5.
The situation is even clearer for PC and Nintendo Switch 2 owners.
GTA VI does not currently have a confirmed PC or Nintendo Switch 2 release. Rockstar’s official platform information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC or Nintendo version announced.
A PC release would not be surprising given Rockstar’s history, but it remains speculation until the developer announces one. The same applies to Switch 2.
Anyone who wants to play GTA VI on launch day therefore needs one of the confirmed consoles.
There is also an unusual detail surrounding the game’s physical release.
GTA VI will be sold physically, but the box will contain a download code rather than a disc.
Rockstar says physical copies will be available from November 12 to allow players to pre-load the game ahead of launch.
That means buying a physical copy will not provide an offline disc version of GTA VI.
Ultimately, PS5 is the best all-round choice. Rockstar has given it the clearest endorsement, the latest gameplay footage was captured on the console and PlayStation confirms PS5 Pro enhancements are supported.
Xbox Series X is still an excellent choice, particularly for players already invested in Microsoft’s ecosystem.
The Series S is the budget alternative for those who simply want access to GTA VI without paying for more powerful hardware.
PS5 Pro is the wildcard. It could ultimately provide the best-looking console version, but Rockstar has not revealed enough to make that a certainty.
For now, the decision is surprisingly straightforward: buy PS5 for the safest overall GTA VI experience, Xbox Series X if you prefer Xbox, Series S if price matters most, and PS5 Pro if you want the premium PlayStation experience and are willing to wait for more details on its GTA VI enhancements.
