Deepika Padukone made her cinematic debut with the Kannada film, Aishwarya (2006) and a superstar was born.

Her breakthrough performance was in the Farrah Khan-directed film, Om Shanti Om (2008). For which she won Best Female Debut at the Filmfare Awards.

Her ability as an actress and her range of characters have made her a truly versatile performer.

Deepika probably is best known for her collaborations with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She plays the lead alongside eventual husband Ranveer Singh, in three of Bhansali’s epic films, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018).

Though her relationship with her husband was kept a secret, their collaborations as on-screen lovers did not fool us! This Jodi’s chemistry in Ram-Leela (2013) and Bajirao Mastani (2015) was beautiful and real.

Deepika made her Hollywood debut in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (2017) alongside Vin Diesel in 2017. Bollywood fans are ready for her to make her mark in Hollywood as well!

Deepika as Rani Padmavati takes on the Rajasthani folk dance, Ghoomar in this majestic video from the period drama, Padmaavat (2018).

She performs the routine with over sixty back up dancers in front of Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) and his first wife, Rani Nagmati (Anupriya Goenka).

According to DNA, Deepika described the video as “one of the most difficult song sequences that Sanjay sir and I have shot for.”

She is adorned in a 30kg Rimple Narula ghagra and 3kg of Tanishq jewellery, but the weight did not stop her! She executed over sixty twirls in this royal routine. 

Accompanied by the video is the amazing voice of Shreya Ghoshal’s as she sings this “landmark” number.

Overall, a visual delight with stunning aerials, choreography and set design, Ghoomar will go down as a classic.

Ek Dil Ek Jaan: Padmaavat (2018)

The video of this love ballad sees Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) prepare for war against Alauddin Kilji (Ranveer Singh). Meanwhile, Padmavati (Deepika) prepares for Jauhar, should her husband fall.

The video opens with stunning visuals of Deepika standing on a balcony smiling down at Shahid.

From there, the two are constantly serving looks with royal costumes. Deepika’s numerous lehengas and Shahid’s robes leave you in awe.

The chemistry between Deepika and Shahid is adored by audiences, as they tearfully gaze into each other’s eyes. She dresses him in chainmail and robes with her eyes fixated on him.

The video ends with Deepika and Shahid walking down a hallway before they say their goodbyes.

Nainowale Ne: Padmaavat (2018)

Nainowale Ne is the backdrop of a montage of when Padmavati (Deepika) and Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) first in Sinhala (modern-day Sri Lanka).

This video takes place in a jungle when the romance between Padmavati and Ratan Singh is ignited by an arrow.

The soft tone compliments the video as the audience is captivated by both Neeti Mohan’s voice and the stunning visuals.

Unfortunately, Nainowale Ne did not make the final cut for Padmaavat with displeased Bollywood fans taking to Twitter.

Deewani Mastani: Bajirao Mastani (2015)

‘Deewani Mastani’ is one of the signature tracks of this Bhansali epic, Bajirao Mastani (2015) that combines Maharashtrian folk and Qawwali.

All gold everything. A visual masterpiece, Mastani (Deepika) not only mesmerises Bajirao (Ranveer Singh) but the audience too!

The video takes place in a majestic gold hall where a captivated Bajirao watches Mastani perform. Meanwhile, Bajirao’s first wife, Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra) looks down from a balcony in envy.  

Deepika, in a stunning gold lehenga, takes on a Remo D’Souza routine which earned him a National Film Award.

The concept draws inspiration from ‘Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya’ from the K. Asif epic, Mughal-E-Azam (1960). Mastani declares her love for Bajirao much like Anarkali (Madhubala) does for Prince Salim (Dilip Kumar)

The hall in which the video takes place was eventually turned into a museum following the video release.

Pinga: Bajirao Mastani (2015)

Bhansali presents ‘Pinga’ with an auteurist sequence similar ‘Dola Re Dola’ from Devdas (2002).

Adorned in Maharashtrian sarees Mastani (Deepika) in passionate maroon and Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra) in royal purple.

The feuding wives of Peshwa Bajirao (Ranveer Singh) put aside their rivalry and perform a high-energy Lavani routine. A traditional Marathi dance.

With incredible footwork and intricate armography, the two actresses prove to be each other’s match in this dance battle of sorts.

The song was inspired by the Marathi film songs, ‘Latpat Latpat Tujha Chaalan Ga’ from the film Amar Bhoopali (1951) and ‘Nach Ka Guma’ from the film Chandanachi Choli Ang Ang Jali (1975).

Mohe Rang Do Laal: Bajirao Mastani (2015)

Another video inspired by Mughal-E-Azam (1960), in particular, the music video, ‘Mohe Panghat Pe Nandlal’.

The video takes place during Holi in Bundelkhand with Bajirao joining Mastani’s family after he assists her army against invaders. She performs on a tranquil fort backdrop surrounded by fountains.

Mohe Rang Do Laal offers a Hindustani classical feel with Shreya Ghoshal’s soft voice and thumri.

Deepika shows off her newly acquired Kathak skills, taught to her by playback singer and choreographer, Pandit Birju Maharaj.

Birju Maharaj was very eager to work with the superstar. He told the Indian Express:

“I had gone to watch ‘Happy New Year’ only with one motive that I have to see how Deepika dances as I have to choreograph her next.”

“I believe, Deepika does brilliant acting but she should do more classical dance so that she can improve her dancing skills.”

Lovely: Happy New Year (2014)

Deepika leaves a “lasting impression” as Lisa Tsering of the Hollywood Reporter said:

Manwa Laage: Happy New Year (2014)

As dance teacher Mohini attempts to teach the men how to dance, a love is ignited between her and Charlie, literally! As objects around them spontaneously combust, including Charlie’s shirt, exposing his chiselled torso.

Nagada Sang Dhol: Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

One of the most famous Deepika and Shreya Ghoshal performances, Nagada Sang Dhol is a Garba song for the movie “Ram-Leela”.

For this movie, Deepika transforms herself into a Gujarati woman in this Romeo and Juliet adaptation. Bhansali brought over Gujarati Garba dancers to teach Deepika, the traditional dance.

A teary-eyed Leela (Deepika) lights diyas before taking on the routine in what would be a career-defining musical performance.

Following the release of the film, Nagada Sang Dhol became an instant classic. It has become a highly requested song at Shreya Ghoshal concerts; popular amongst young audiences.

Unfortunately, Deepika sustained minor injuries to her feet during shooting. However, she powered through the performance, evident in some shots where she is seen with bandages on her feet.

Lahu Munh Lag Gaya: Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

Sparks fly as Ram (Ranveer Singh) sneaks into the Sanera’s Holi celebration to flirt with Leela (Deepika). The two caress themselves with red powder, gaze seductively into each other’s eyes and share a kiss

Leela then engages in a group Garba dance, shortly followed by Ram and the two star-crossed lovers cannot keep their eyes off each other.

The music begins with a poetry recitation by Shail Hada, going into the Garba interval.

Mohar Basu of Koimoi said:

“I could have easily ignored this song but the instrumental arrangement is fascinatingly well synced.”

Using the rustic tunes from Gujrat, the arrangements of rhythm is so perfectly done that it is mesmerizing.”

The blend of contemporary and Gujarati instruments were excellent in conveying this forbidden chemistry.

Ang Laga De: Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

Additionally through CGI, archive footage and body doubles, young versions of veteran actors Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra. Of course, at the time of shooting the film, Dutt had passed and Khanna was unwell.

In the 2014 Miss America pageant, winner Nina Davaluri (Miss New York) of South Indian descent, performed a Bollywood fusion dance to the track.
