A court heard Chelsea striker Sam Kerr allegedly called a Metropolitan Police officer “stupid and white” after a dispute with a taxi driver.

The Australian footballer is on trial accused of racially aggravated harassment towards PC Stephen Lovell during an incident in southwest London on January 30, 2023.

Prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones KC told Kingston Crown Court that Kerr and her partner, footballer Kristie Mewis, had been drinking before getting a taxi.

The driver took them to Twickenham Police Station after claiming they refused to pay clean-up costs.

He alleged one passenger had been sick and the black cab’s rear window had been broken.

At the station, Kerr allegedly became “abusive and insulting” towards PC Lovell.

Footage from the officer’s body-worn camera showed Kerr telling PC Lovell and PC Samuel Limb that she and Mewis were “very scared” and trying to escape when the vehicle was damaged.

She said: “I hate to break it to you, but when a male is driving a f*****g car, for us, for two women, it’s f****d, it’s fg scary.”

Sam Kerr also told officers: “This taxi driver held me and her hostage for about 15 minutes.

“I was like, ‘Please, let us out and I will pay whatever you want’. We were begging to get out of there. We were trying to escape – we were trapped.”

The 31-year-old insisted they had felt an “emergency” and asked:

“What do you expect us to do as women in that situation?”

Kerr, who has Indian ancestry, also said at one point:

“I’ll get the f*****g Chelsea lawyers on this.”

The footage showed both Kerr and Mewis, who plays for West Ham United, appearing intoxicated and distressed. Mewis was visibly crying.

The couple also accused officers of believing the taxi driver’s account over their own.

PC Lovell, who gave evidence on February 3, said Kerr’s “stupid and white” comment made him feel “upset”.

He also claimed Kerr mentioned her wealth, which he felt was “like I was trying to be belittled”.

Kerr’s defence lawyer is expected to cross-examine PC Lovell when the trial resumes on February 4.

Kerr, one of the world’s top female strikers and Australia’s all-time top scorer with 69 goals, has been sidelined since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2024.

Her trial is set to conclude this week.
