"This accent sounds like a caricature"
Anushka Sharma took to Instagram on January 6, 2022, to share the teaser of her upcoming film Chakda Xpress.
While fans of Anushka Sharma showered the actress with praise and excitement for her comeback, many social media users couldn’t help but question her accent and appearance.
Chakda Xpress, the biopic of cricketer Jhulan Goswami, marks Anushka’s first film in three years.
The actress was last seen in 2018’s Zero, which was considered a flop at the box office, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.
Several social media users have suggested that Anushka Sharma should have picked a different film for her comeback, given her “weird” Bengali accent and the poor attempt at darkening her skin.
Bengali cricketer Jhulan Goswami was the captain of the India national women’s cricket team.
The Chakda Xpress teaser incorporates a line spoken in Bengali by Anushka Sharma, which did not get the approval of netizens.
Talking about her ambition to make it big in the world of cricket, as Jhulan, Anushka says:
“But don’t you worry.”
Anushka Sharma’s accent has been described as “cringe” by many social media users, while some highlighted that a Bengali actress would have been better suited for the role.
One user said: “So sorry but I’m low-key offended by that accent as a Bengali.
“Do not come at me saying that Jhulan speaks like that or whatever.
“As a native Bengali, this accent sounds like a caricature and I don’t think anybody who isn’t well versed with the language will understand.”
Another added: “There are some fine actresses in the Bengali industry who could have played the role of Jhulan with ease.
“But, no, not happening as we still have to get a popular actor of Bollywood, put on a layer of dusky makeup and still not look the part, not even the accent.”
A third commented: “Man Anushka isn’t even looking half as similar as Jhulan Goswami.
“Neither in height nor complexion. Even her Bengali accent is very cringe.”
While sharing the teaser with her 56 million Instagram followers, Anushka Sharma wrote:
“It is a really special film because it is essentially a story of tremendous sacrifice.
“Chakda Xpress is inspired by the life and times of former Indian captain Jhulan Goswami and it will be an eye-opener into the world of women’s cricket.”
Directed by Prosit Roy and produced by Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Films, Chakda Xpress is set to release directly onto Netflix.
However, the release date of Chakda Xpress is yet to be shared.
