Amir Khan is another celebrity who has publicly shown his support for the ongoing farmers’ protest in India.

The boxer took to Twitter to show his solidarity with them as well as members of the Sikh community who continue to seek justice and are “raising their voices around the world”.

The protests have been going on for more than a week.

Thousands of Indian farmers have demonstrated against the laws introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government which they believe will endanger their livelihoods.

The government has insisted that the changes will benefit farmers as it will allow them to market their produce and boost production through private investment.

However, farmers allege that they were never told.

Protesting farmers have blocked major highways as they held talks with the government, however, both are yet to reach a conclusion.

A nationwide strike is set for December 8, 2020.

Farmers said they would intensify protests and occupy toll plazas across India on the strike day if the government did not abolish the laws.

While protests have largely been peaceful, there have been clashes between protestors and police.

The protests have attracted attention across the world, with celebrities and influential figures showing their support for the farmers.

One of those is Amir Khan who highlighted that farmers are being subjected to police brutality despite carrying out peaceful protests.

He also extended his support to Sikhs who fight for justice.

The former world champion wrote: “Disturbing scenes of violence against peaceful farmers protesting for their rights.

“My support and solidarity is with them, as well as all of my Sikh brothers and sisters seeking justice and raising their voices around the world.”

Social media users thanked Amir for using his platform to make the rest of the world aware of what is going on.

Amir Khan is not the only celebrity who has stood with the farmers.

YouTuber Lilly Singh tweeted about the protests while actor Diljit Dosanjh went to Delhi’s Singhu border and addressed the farmers, praising them and urging the government to listen to them.

In the UK, 36 MPs are seeking intervention while thousands of Sikh community members gathered outside the Indian High Commission in London for nearly three hours.

The support protest was called to show solidarity with the farmers.

An estimated 700 vehicles were concentrated around the protest venue, bringing areas around Trafalgar Square, Holborn and Oxford Circus to a halt.

Dabinderjit Singh, of the Federation of Sikh Organisation, said:

“The turnout surpassed our imagination. Thousands have come from all over the United Kingdom on their own.

“They are outraged and demand justice for the farmers in India.”
