"I’m determined to win another World Championship and I’m confident I’ve got the right team behind me to help me do so."

Amir Khan will finally make his return to the ring, after a long-term hiatus from his boxing career. He has signed a new multi-fight deal with Matchroom and Eddie Hearn, its promoter.

This means he will face three fights, the first scheduled on 21st April 2018. It will take place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. This will mark a return for Amir boxing in the UK, after 7 years.

The sportsman announced the exciting news at a special London press conference on 10th January 2018.

Many may feel perplexed by this announcement – as he and Eddie were previously embroiled in a feud. It seems now the two have put aside their differences. In a press release, Amir said:

“I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Matchroom.

“This decision is not one I’ve taken lightly, as I’m at a hugely important time in my career, but having spoken to Eddie at length, it was clear he and I were on the same page in terms of what I want to be doing and what I still want to achieve.

“I’m determined to win another World Championship and I’m confident I’ve got the right team behind me to help me do so.”

As of yet, it remains unclear who Amir’s first opponent will be in April. However, many hope he will eventually fight against his long-term rival, Kell Brook. In the past, Eddie has attempted to persuade the British Asian star to agree to such a match, with little success.

In August 2017, Amir was asked about Kell Brook and answered: “The only way I would take that Brook fight is if he left Eddie Hearn. I just don’t like Eddie Hearn.” We wonder then how he and Eddie came to an agreement.

Nevertheless, it signals a fantastic return for fans to see Amir back in action! Eddie revealed more about the boxer’s fights, saying:

“The plan is to box in April and then again in August or September in preparation for a super fight in Winter 2018.

“The target is to provide him with the biggest fights possible with a mouth-watering list of names including the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Kell Brook, Keith Thurman and Errol Spence. I’m excited to get started and looking forward to a huge night of boxing on April 21.”

Amir caused a frenzy when he announced the press conference a day prior. With the London Eye in the background, he told social media how he would “talk about [his] career and everything else”.

Fans will be excited to see the British Asian star back in the ring. His last match was in May 2016, when he lost to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Due to a hand injury, this prompted a long hiatus for the boxer – something which he admitted caused a loss of focus.

However, his time away from the ring has been far from quiet. From his temporary marital woes with Faryal Makhdoom and an eventful time in I’m A Celebrity, the boxer still made many headlines.

But with this exciting announcement, Amir looks set to enjoy a fantastic year ahead. We can’t wait for 21st April 2018, to see the return of this boxing champion!
