"So much for 'popular' when it’s just political."
On October 11, 2025, it was a sparkling night of fanfare for Bollywood.
The majority of the industry gathered in Gujarat to attend the 70th Filmfare Awards.
A key highlight of the evening was when Alia Bhatt won the ‘Best Actress’ award for her performance in Jigra (2024).
The actress beat out other performers, including Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kriti Sanon, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Yami Gautam Dhar.
This marked Alia’s third consecutive win in the category, as well as her sixth overall.
Alia also overtook Nutan and Kajol, breaking their record of five wins for ‘Best Actress’.
Alia has previously won the award for Udta Punjab (2016), Raazi (2018), Gully Boy (2019), Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023).
However, Alia’s victory garnered mixed reactions from netizens, especially considering that Jigra was not a box office success when it was released.
Some defended her win. While acknowledging the failure of the film, they praised Alia’s performance.
Furthermore, Abhishek Bachchan and Kartik Aaryan shared the ‘Best Actor’ gong for I Want To Talk (2024) and Chandu Champion (2024), respectively.
Both films were also flops at the box office.
One user said: “On one side, these hypocrites say they don’t care about Filmfare because it’s rigged.
“Now, when Alia Bhatt wins, they suddenly wake up from sleep and start trolling her.
“Kartik and Abhishek also won for their flop films, and actors have already won before.
“She was brilliant in Jigra and won, so don’t cry.”
The content creator, Anmol Jamwal, added: “Alia Bhatt was brilliant in Jigra!
“Kriti from Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and Yami from Article 370 being deserving of the award can be debated.
“Their films fared well at the box office, and this is a popular category.
“However, anyone stating that Alia was poor in Jigra is just lying through their teeth.”
Users on Reddit slammed the decision to award Alia. Many netizens wrote lengthy posts to criticise the star.
One such post read: “I’m shocked beyond words at this travesty.
“I was genuinely rooting for Yami or Kriti to win this.
“I used to be a huge fan of Dharma since childhood and Karan Johar movies in particular, and also liked Alia if not loved her.
“But this has pushed me over the edge.
“I thought Alia winning for Gully Boy or Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani was bad.
“But winning for Jigra is the final nail in the coffin for me.
“Unfollowing Filmfare, Alia, Karan Johar, and Dharma. Can’t take any of this nonsense anymore.
“They’ve lost a genuine fan forever.”
Another user wrote: “I don’t even know what to say anymore.
“How on earth does Alia Bhatt keep bagging every ‘Best Actress’ award year after year, no matter what the movie’s outcome is?
“The award is literally titled ‘Best Actress (Popular Category)’, yet her film this time was a flop.
“How does that even make sense?
“She’s talented, yes, and no one denies that.
“But this is her sixth win, and honestly, she truly deserved maybe three out of those six.
“The rest? Pure favoritism. Every year, it feels like Filmfare is just recycling the same names.
“What’s even the point of nominating others if the result is already decided?
“Yami Gautam gave a far more powerful and nuanced performance this year but of course, she gets sidelined again.
“So much for ‘popular’ when it’s just political.
“It’s exhausting watching deserving actresses lose just because the industry can’t get over its obsession with one person.
“Bollywood really needs to fix this award culture.”
Alia was not at the ceremony to receive her award.
Filmfare has faced allegations of unethical conduct for decades.
Several stars including Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Kangana Ranaut have famously disassociated themselves from the organisation owing to an alleged lack of merit.
Meanwhile, Laapataa Ladies (2023) dominated the 2025 ceremony with 13 wins, including ‘Best Film’.
On the work front, Alia Bhatt will next be seen in Alpha, which will be the seventh instalment of the YRF Spy Universe.
She also has the likes of Love & War and Brahmastra: Part Two – Dev on the cards.
