Tamil film actress Meera Mithun was arrested for making derogatory comments against people belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

A complaint was filed by Vanni Arasu, the leader of the Dalit-centric party Viduthalai Siruthaigal Katchi. Meera was subsequently booked.

She was arrested in Kerala on August 15, 2021, after she failed to appear for a police inquiry.

At the time of her arrest, Meera shared a video of herself, claiming that she was being mistreated by the police.

She also threatened to harm herself if they tried to arrest her.

Meera even appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking them to help her.

In a video that led to her arrest, Meera was heard saying that all members of the Scheduled Caste community should be thrown out of the film industry.

She had said: “The members of the SC community face trouble mostly because they indulge in illegal activities and crime.

“No one will unnecessarily speak ill of someone without a reason.”

She went on to accuse SC directors and film personalities of being the reason for all illegal activities in the industry.

Meera alleged that a director used her picture without permission for a film’s first look before making a derogatory remark towards the SC community.

The viral video was criticised by viewers and many called for action to be taken against her.

Meera was booked under seven sections Sections 153, 153 A(1) (a), 505 (1) (b) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act earlier in August 2021.

After she failed to turn up for the inquiry, police launched a search for her and arrested her in Kerala.

Following her arrest, Meera Mithun was sent to judicial custody until August 27, 2021.

Meera Mithun has appeared in a few Tamil films such as 8 Thottakkal. She was also a contestant on Bigg Boss Tamil 3.

Away from films, Meera has often hit the headlines for her controversial remarks.

In 2020, she accused Tamil actors Vijay and Rajinikanth of defaming her.

She also claimed that she became a part of Hollywood because Kollywood rejected her.

In August 2020, Meera made several derogatory remarks against actors Trisha, Jyothika and Aishwarya Rajesh and Sangeetha, the wife of Vijay.

Her statements were condemned by director Bharathiraja.
