"I've never seen a more dedicated actor"

Ajay Devgn has revealed what it was like directing Amitabh Bachchan in his upcoming film Mayday.

Billed as an “edge-of-the-seat” drama, Mayday features Ajay as Siddharth Awasthi.

Meanwhile, details of Amitabh’s role have been kept under wraps.

Ajay has now shared his experience of directing the legendary Bollywood star.

He said: “He is a delight to work with.

“I’ve never seen a more dedicated actor, we are nothing in front of him.

“Once he is on set, he will keep rehearsing, keep thinking about the scene. It’s phenomenal.”

Mayday marks Ajay Devgn’s return to directing since the likes of Shivaay (2016) and U Me Aur Hum (2008).

He went on to say that his equation with Amitabh goes beyond the actor-director relationship.

Ajay continued: “I’ve known him since I was a kid.

“So whatever I had to take away from him, I must’ve taken it back then. It’s imbibed. With him, it’s a different rapport.

“From childhood, I could tell him whatever I wanted to.

“It took him two minutes to come on board. One narration and that’s it.”

The film also stars Rakul Preet Singh and Angira Dhar.

Filming began in December 2020 and according to Ajay Devgn, Mayday is nearly complete with five days of filming remaining.

The film is set to release on April 29, 2022.

Ajay Devgn last starred in the period war film Bhuj: The Pride of India, which was released on Disney+Hotstar on August 13, 2021.

Ajay has a number of films in the pipeline.

This includes Maidaan, which features him as famous Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, and Indra Kumar’s comedy Thank God.

He will also make his Telugu film debut in RRR.

Ajay will also play the role of notorious gangster Karim Lala in Gangubai Kathiawadi, which reunites him with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali 22 years after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

He said: “It was great to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

“I’ve always had a great rapport with him.

“It felt like we picked it up from where we had stopped. It was as comfortable working with him now as it was then.”

Gangubai Kathiawadi stars Alia Bhatt as Gangubai Kothewali, a young girl sold into prostitution and becomes the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura.

Ajay has also begun filming for his digital debut series Rudra – The Edge of Darkness.
