"We hope to inspire and connect with viewers."
Paithani is an intriguing and vibrant web series that recently premiered on ZEE5 Global.
India’s rich cultural heritage is often best represented through art forms, and the Paithani saree is an everlasting symbol of craftsmanship and tradition.
The web series is an elegant and entertaining mosaic of stories and struggles of the people pioneering this art.
Paithani narrates the saga of Godavari (Mrinal Kulkarni), who is a renowned artisan known for her exquisite sarees.
As retirement approaches, her daughter Kaveri (Eisha Singh) strives to fulfil Godavari’s last dream – to weave one last saree.
Their journey is a tapestry of family loyalty, the sacrifices of women, and preserving identity in an ever-changing landscape.
Paithani weaving was historically a source of livelihood for women and a popular way of preserving independence and tradition.
The show is adorned with vibrant colours and stunning cinematography, capitalising on the beauty of these sarees and the dynamism of Maharashtra.
It offers viewers globally a chance to explore the artistry of India from their own homes.
Describing her character in the series, Mrinal said: “The most important thing was my character. Her purity and simplicity.
“I liked the fact that all female characters in the show are named after rivers.
“My name is Godavari, my daughter’s name is Kaveri, and my mother’s name is Ganga.
“The thought behind it is that he says, ‘A river always keeps flowing, and so is the life of a woman. No matter what sadness or problems come, they are always flowing, she keeps giving, and never takes anything’.
“And such is the character of Godavari.”
Mrinal also extended praise towards her co-star, Eisha.
She commented: “It was very heartwarming to work with Eisha, and now that she is in Bigg Boss 18, I wish her the best.”
The Paithani saree is often referred to as the ‘queen of silks’. It is an embroidery that dates back centuries.
In the show, viewers can also experience the weaving process that combines pure silk with gold and silver threads.
The show is directed by Gajendra Ahire. Sharing his vision, he said:
“This show is a heartfelt tribute to the rich cultural heritage of Maharashtra, embodied in the beautiful Paithani saree.”
“Through the journey of a mother and daughter, we explore themes of love, dreams, and the challenges they face together.
“Naming the show Paithani symbolises not just the artistry of weaving but also the cherished connections that bind us.
“It’s a proud moment for our entire team, and we hope to inspire and connect with viewers everywhere through the timeless beauty of Paithani.”
The show was released on ZEE5 Global on November 15, 2024 and is available to stream for subscribers now.
