"one of the most exciting frontiers for table tennis globally."

World Table Tennis (WTT), the commercial and events wing of the International Table Tennis Federation, has expanded into India in a bid to boost table tennis there.

The new entity, known as WTT India, is a strategic move aimed at expanding the sport’s presence in India.

It will deliver international tournaments, support Indian athletes, and grow the game’s commercial and fan base.

WTT India will manage events at elite and junior levels while supporting player development.

The organisation said the move aligns with its global strategy to localise operations and promote long-term growth in key regions.

Steve Dainton, WTT Chief Executive Officer, said: “India represents one of the most exciting frontiers for table tennis globally.

“The passion is there. The infrastructure is coming. The player base is growing.

“With WTT India, we’re now fully invested in building a long-term ecosystem that’s good for India, and good for the game.

“It’s about establishing a presence, creating new opportunities, and integrating India into the very fabric of our global calendar and community.”

WTT began its India journey with the WTT Star Contender Goa in 2023.

The event returned in 2024 and has since expanded into Chennai in 2025, with IndianOil as its presenting partner.

The move reflects growing interest and investment in Indian sport, with table tennis gaining both grassroots and institutional backing.

WTT broadcasts in more than 180 countries and aims to position table tennis as a year-round global sport with premium production and digital storytelling.

Further solidifying its Indian presence, WTT India’s Board will include Vita Dani, a prominent Indian sports entrepreneur and Chairperson of Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT).

Dani, known for her advocacy for athlete development and grassroots investment, said:

“WTT India gives us the platform to channel international energy into a local movement.”

“We have the talent, the ambition, and now the structure to dream bigger and deliver.”

Indian table tennis star Sharath Kamal Achanta has been named WTT India’s official ambassador.

He said: “The sport has come so far in India, and now, with WTT officially here, we have the chance to elevate it like never before.”

The launch of WTT India cements the country’s role in the future of global table tennis and underscores WTT’s commitment to building a sustainable ecosystem for the sport.
