"The victim conspired with her lawyer to build a strong case against the actor"
The female astrologer who accused Karan Oberoi of rape was arrested on June 17, 2019, for allegedly staging an attack on herself.
Oshiwara Police also arrested her lawyer Ali Kashif Khan.
The 35-year-old woman had filed a police complaint in May 2019 after she was attacked by two men while she was going for a morning walk.
She claimed that the men had a bottle filled with acid and threw a note at her which told her to take back the case against Karan Oberoi.
An FIR was registered and officers arrested four suspects during the early stages of the investigation. They found that one was a distant relative of Khan.
Officers soon suspected the woman and Khan to be involved in the attack.
Khan was called to the police station for questioning where he confessed that the attack was staged.
He explained to the police that he planned the attack. An officer said:
“The complainant had earlier accused an actor (Karan Oberoi) of raping her in 2016. Based on her complaint the actor was arrested.
“The victim conspired with her lawyer to build a strong case against the actor and hence the latter hatched a plan along with his relative.”
After the attack was planned, the woman posted the location of where she would be during her walk on social media. The two men arrived at the area on a motorbike and demanded that she took back the case.
Altamash Ansari and Zeeshan Ahmed both know the lawyer and one of them is a relative.
While Ansari was paid to execute the fake attack, Ahmed lent his bike to Arafat Ahmed and Jitin Santosh who acted as the attackers.
They also confessed to their roles in the crime. Senior police officer Shailesh Pasalwar said:
“The complainant has been arrested under section 182 (false information, with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person) and 203 (giving false information respecting an offence committed) of IPC, we are probing the matter further.
“Another of the accused will be arrested soon.”
After being arrested, the woman remains in judicial custody. She will be produced in front of the court for further investigation.
The woman had alleged that she was raped by Karan Oberoi after he promised to marry her. He filmed the attack and used the video to extort money from her.
However, Karan was supported by his friends who said the woman was making false accusations in a bid to ruin the actor’s reputation.
Oberoi was arrested on May 5, 2019, and remained in custody while an investigation was underway. On June 7, he was granted bail.
