On December 15, 2020, Mumbai Crime Branch arrested Indian TV actor Salman Jaffery on charges of robbery.
The actor allegedly robbed an woman in Dehradun by posing as a cop.
The MCB team had got information from Dehradun Police and then took action.
The MCB has alleged that the actor took different flights in a bid to evade police.
He took flights from Chandigarh-Dehradun to several cities of North India before he was finally caught in Mumbai.
Salman Jaffery has worked in Indian TV shows like Raja Shivchhatrapati and Savdhaan India.
Jaffery’s robbery incident came to light after an elderly woman from Dehradun filed a police complaint of robbery and cheating.
She had alleged that a man posing to be a police officer had robbed her of her jewellery worth Rs. 5 Lakh (£5,000).
A case was registered at Patel Nagar Police Station in Dehradun under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for cheating.
The 64-year-old woman alleged that when she was on her way back home from the temple, the accused Salman confronted her.
He portrayed himself as a police officer and under the pretext of patting her down, the accused made her remove all her jewellery.
He packed the jewellery in a newspaper and swapped them with stones packed in similar newspaper wrappings.
Jaffery then fled from the scene.
Reportedly, Jaffery admitted to the crime during questioning.
However, neither the actor nor Mumbai Police have given a statement on his arrest or the reasons behind his crime.
Jaffery starrer Raja Shivchhatrapati was a South Indian TV show aired in 2008-09 on Indian TV channel Star Pravah.
The series was re-broadcast in April 2020 in India during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The show was based on Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire which fought against the Mughal Empire.
Whereas, another Jaffery starrer Indian show Saavdhan India – India Fights Back, is an Indian Hindi-language crime show aired by Star Bharat.
The show focuses on real-life crime incidents in India dramatised for TV.
Savdhaan India showcases the story of the struggle of the victims to get justice for their sufferings.
The TV show has been rebooted to better reflect the stories in various cities or states in India, such as Savdhaan India – Maharashtra Fights Back is set in Maharashtra.
The show has been airing since 2012 and is one of India’s longest-running television series based on episode count.
