"when I insisted on marriage, he threatened me"
Indian television actor Karan Oberoi, known for starring in serials like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Inside Edge has been arrested and remanded in custody in Mumbai for allegedly raping an astrologer after the promise of marriage.
It’s been widely reported that Oberoi recorded a video on his phone of him raping the woman after he drugged the woman to sedate her. He then was using the video to blackmail her to extort money from her.
A police report was filed against the actor in which the victim stated that she met Oberoi in October 2016 through a dating app. Soon after the pair became friends and a relationship developed between them.
Then as the relationship progressed, over some time, Oberoi began to promise that he would marry her. However, he used this as a way of eventually blackmailing her.
The victim said she visited Oberoi’s flat in suburban Oshiwara and he offered her a drink of coconut water. After she drank it, she said she started to feel very dizzy. After which she was sedated and the accused raped her and filmed the act.
He threatened to release the video clips of raping her and demanded the money.
The victim, who is an astrologer, said:
“Using the video, the victim blackmailed me and took money from me.”
“However, whenever I asked him about marriage he kept ignoring it and would ask for more money.
“Recently, when I insisted on marriage, he threatened me and said do whatever you want to do.”
Senior inspector Shailesh Pasalwad from Oshiwara police station said that further to the woman’s complaint, they arrested Oberoi on Sunday, May 5, 2019. The actor and singer has been booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 376 (rape) and 384 (extortion).
Police say he will be remanded in custody until May 9, 2019, while investigations continue.
Karan Oberoi became popular for his performance as Raghav Oberoi in Sony TV’s show Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. The show was actress Mona Singh’s claim to fame, who plays Jassi.
In fact, Karan Oberoi and Mona Singh began dating and he also got engaged later. However, sometime later, the engagement was called off.
Karan Oberoi is also a singer and a member of a popular music group called A Band of Boys. He has sung hit songs like Meri Neend and Gori with the band.
