Over 40,000 Bangalore women have signed up to have extramarital affairs, that is according to a study by a dating app.

Gleeden is the first extramarital dating site to be launched in India and is mainly targeted at women.

They discovered that there are a total of 135,000 people from Bangalore having an affair which is the highest recorded in the country.

Of this, 43,200 are Bangalore women. Gleeden confirmed that the city had the highest number of people seeking an extramarital relationship though it did not provide figures for other cities in India.

The study found that these women were looking for “excitement and freedom” outside their marriage.

Marketing Specialist for Gleeden Solene Paillet said:

“It won’t be wrong if we call Bengaluru the ‘infidelity capital’ of India.

“Out of the total number of subscribers on Gleeden, 27% of the total active users are from Bengaluru and the men to women ratio is 32%:68%.”

A 31-year-old woman is a user of the dating app and stated that she felt “free” from her tedious life.

She explained: “Actually the affair has helped to improve my relationships with my family.”

Before her affair, she said she lacked any motivation. The woman explained that she does not want to leave her family despite the extramarital affair.

“I hope my child will understand, if he ever finds out, that the relationship made his mother happy.”

Ms Paillet added: “In double income households in large metropolitan cities, it’s common for husbands and wives to go on business trips.

“52% of women and 57% who have registered with us have cheated during such trips.”

Dr Naveen Jayaram is a psychiatrist at Sakra World Hospital Bengaluru said that there are a number of reasons as to why someone would have an affair.

They included long distance relationships, incompatibility, their partner’s long working hours and monotonous life.

Manipal Hospital psychiatrist Dr Bhupendra Chaudhry explained that women also experiment or when they are not sexually satisfied.

He stated: “After a certain time, they feel the burden of handling two relationships.

“Some try to make things right and open up to their partners but they feel the guilt of having cheated on someone who trusted them.”

Actor and journalist Prakash Belawadi shut down the study’s claims and called it “a bogus claim and a promotional gimmick”.

He said: “I don’t trust this site and hence would not like to comment unless someone authenticates their claims.

“It is also important to ask what constitutes an affair. How long should they have been seeing each other to call it an affair?”

Mr Belawadi also said that it was not surprising that 135,000 people in Bangalore were having an affair out of a population of 12 million.

Author Gita Aravamudan was also sceptical of the study and said that the site would only be used by tech-savvy people.

“Extramarital affairs can exist across the society. There would still be many people who do not have access to this dating site but are having extramarital affairs.”

Writer Chaya Srivatsa added that it was understandable that Bangalore would have the highest number of affairs because there are many professionals from other cities who come to the city for work.
