Mamdani’s creative pursuits also attracted attention.
Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has made history as New York’s first Muslim mayor, and its youngest.
The 34-year-old self-described “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare” defeated fellow Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a landmark election.
His victory marks a shift towards left-leaning politics in America’s largest city.
Mamdani’s campaign promised sweeping reforms, including free public transport, rent freezes, and state-owned food stores.
However, tensions with President Trump, who has threatened to cut federal funding to New York, may challenge his plans.
Born in Kampala, Uganda, on October 18, 1991, Mamdani is the son of academic Mahmood Mamdani and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mira Nair, who are both of Indian descent.
The family moved to New York when Mamdani was seven.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in Africana studies in 2014, he worked in Queens as a home foreclosure specialist, assisting low-income homeowners.
That experience shaped his political outlook and inspired his focus on housing affordability.
Mamdani’s creative pursuits also attracted attention.
Under the name Young Cardamom, he produced hip-hop music blending English and Ugandan lyrics, curating the soundtrack for his mother’s Disney film Queen of Katwe.
Naturalised as a US citizen in 2018, Mamdani entered politics two years later.
In 2020, he won the seat for New York’s 36th State Assembly district, unseating five-term incumbent Aravella Simotas by 346 votes. He was later re-elected unopposed in both 2022 and 2024.
Announcing his mayoral run in October 2024, Zohran Mamdani positioned himself as a voice for radical change.
Initially viewed as an outsider, he stunned observers by defeating Cuomo in the Democratic primary by nearly 10 percentage points.
He describes himself as a “democratic socialist” and “Trump’s worst enemy”.
His manifesto includes higher taxes on the wealthy to fund free city buses and universal childcare. He has also pledged to freeze rents for roughly one million rent-regulated apartments.
He is married to Rama Duwaji, an animator and illustrator.
Throughout her career, she has worked with the likes of Spotify, BBC and Apple.

Zohran Mamdani’s outspoken views have drawn criticism from business leaders and sections of New York’s Jewish community.
He previously accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and said he would order the city’s police to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he entered New York under International Criminal Court charges.
Rabbi Angela Buchdahl of Manhattan’s Central Synagogue said Mamdani’s remarks “contributed to a mainstreaming of some of the most abhorrent antisemitism” but did not endorse another candidate.
Mamdani has since sought to moderate some of his earlier positions. Once an advocate of defunding the police, he now says that stance “doesn’t represent his current agenda.”
Following an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, Mamdani also faced backlash for saying that in an economically just world, “I don’t think that we should have billionaires.”
He later clarified that he intends to work with billionaires to address the city’s challenges.
President Trump labelled Mamdani a “communist lunatic” after his primary win, later endorsing Cuomo on the eve of the election.
Trump said: “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice.
“You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!”
In response, Mamdani condemned the “MAGA movement’s embrace” of Cuomo and criticised Elon Musk’s public support for the former governor.
On Truth Social, Trump renewed threats to withhold federal funding, warning New Yorkers they had “no choice” but to vote for Cuomo.
Despite the attacks, Zohran Mamdani’s progressive message resonated with voters seeking change.
His election signals a new political era for New York, one defined by ambition, controversy, and the city’s youngest leader in history.
Mamdani will officially enter office on January 1, 2026.
