"Imagine fumbling the future Mayor of NYC..."

There are few things more humbling than realising you might have missed out on someone extraordinary because of a dating app filter.

One woman on X is living that exact nightmare after revealing she once rejected Zohran Mamdani, now New York’s youngest and first Muslim Mayor, because of his height.

The revelation began with a tweet that quickly went viral, showing a screengrab of a woman sharing her story on TikTok.

The post, captioned “Fumble of the century,” described how she once matched with Mamdani on Hinge a few years ago in New York City but decided to swipe left.

“He was listed as either 5’11 or 5’10, and younger me knew that meant he was most likely 5’9,” she admitted.

“Present me appreciates that he was more honest than most guys on there.”

The confession sparked laughter and disbelief across social media, with many dubbing it one of the biggest dating “fumbles” online.

Users flooded the comments with humorous takes.

One wrote, “Somewhere in America, a future President is barely getting matches because he’s too nice.”

Another joked, “Imagine fumbling the future Mayor of NYC because of his height.”

A third quipped, “Wait what, there’s heightflation now? Is being honest a disadvantage on these apps?”

Others sympathised, saying they would “cry themselves to sleep” if they had made the same mistake.

Adding to the irony, Zohran Mamdani is reportedly 5’10, which makes the rejection even more amusing.

Yet, his love life ultimately found its course.

In a twist of fate, Mamdani later met his wife, Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji, on the same app in 2021.

The couple maintained a low profile while Mamdani’s political career gained momentum.

After dating for a while, he proposed to Duwaji in October 2024, and they celebrated their nikah and engagement that December in Dubai with a lavish event overlooking the Burj Khalifa.

Their civil wedding took place at the New York City Clerk’s Office in early 2025, followed by a celebration in Uganda.

Zohran Mamdani, aged 34, has made history as New York’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest.

The Democratic socialist described himself as “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare” during his campaign, which promised sweeping reforms such as free public transport, rent freezes, and state-owned food stores.

He defeated fellow Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a landmark election, marking a significant shift towards left-leaning politics in America’s largest city.

However, his ambitious plans may face challenges, as President Trump has threatened to cut federal funding to New York.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, on October 18, 1991, Mamdani is the son of renowned academic Mahmood Mamdani and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mira Nair, both of Indian descent.

His family moved to New York when he was seven.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Africana studies in 2014, he worked in Queens as a home foreclosure specialist, helping low-income homeowners.

Beyond politics, Mamdani has also shown creative flair, often engaging with art and activism in ways that resonate with New York’s younger, more progressive demographic.
