"His passing marks the end of an era"

Billionaire and Hinduja Group chairman Gopichand Parmanand Hinduja has passed away in London at the age of 85.

Tory peer Rami Ranger reportedly announced the death.

In a statement to Hindustan Times, he said: “Dear friends, with a heavy heart, I share with you the tragic loss of our beloved friend, Mr GP Hinduja, who has departed for his heavenly abode.

“He was one of the most gracious, humble, and loyal friends.

“His passing marks the end of an era, as he was truly a well-wisher of the community and a guiding force.

“I had the privilege of knowing him over many years; his qualities were unique, a tremendous sense of humour, commitment to the community and country, India, and he always supported good causes.

“He has left a huge vacuum behind that will be difficult to fill. May he rest in peace in heaven. Om Shanti.”

Born in 1940 in India, he also served as chairman of Hinduja Automotive Ltd and became chairman of the Hinduja Group in 2023, following the death of his elder brother, Srichand Hinduja.

Hinduja graduated from Mumbai’s Jai Hind College in 1959 and held an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University of Westminster. He was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Economics by London’s Richmond College.

The Hinduja family business was founded by GP Hinduja’s father, Parmanand Hinduja, in 1914.

GP and his brother Srichand transformed the family trading company into the multinational conglomerate it is today. He was the second of four Hinduja brothers who jointly built and managed the group.

After Srichand Hinduja’s passing, Gopichand assumed the role of chairman in May 2023, steering the family’s global business network.

As a British citizen, he was consistently listed as one of the UK’s wealthiest businessmen.

The Hindujas also played a prominent role in London’s real estate sector, owning iconic properties such as the Old War Office building, now the Raffles London hotel, and Carlton House Terrace near Buckingham Palace.

He is survived by his wife, Sunita, sons Sanjay and Dheeraj, and daughter Rita.

The family’s combined net worth is £35.3 billion, with business interests spanning banking, media, and energy.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2025, GP Hinduja and his family topped the list with a net worth of £35.304 billion.
