Smriti Biswas sadly passed away on July 4, 2024. She was 100 years old.
She died in Nashik, Maharashtra and was celebrated for her work in Hindi, Bengali and Marathi cinema.
Smriti made her film debut as a child star in Sandhya (1930).
She went on to appear in several films across her career, acting with many top Bollywood actors.
These included Balraj Sahni, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor and Uttam Kumar.
Tributes poured in for the actress on social media.
Pavan Jha wrote on X: “The girl with the ‘oomph’ factor, and of course, she was a reluctant vamp.
“She lit up screen in many of those unforgettable songs of the 1950s.
“May her soul keeps breathing in those magical frames.”
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta took to his Instagram profile to pay tribute to Smriti Biswas.
Posting a picture of the actress, Hansal wrote:
“Go away in peace and to a happier place dear Smritiji. Thank you for blessing our lives.”
His tribute attracted similar condolences from fans.
One said: “Prayers and lots of good energy for this beautiful soul.”
Another added: “OMG. I knew her – she was such a sweet, gentle lady.”
A third wrote: “May her soul rest in eternal peace bliss and glory.
“Prayers, strength, peace, and light love to all loved ones.
“May God bless them with happiness and good health always.”
Smriti Biswas married the filmmaker SD Narang. He died in 1986.
After being widowed, Smriti reportedly led a lonely life of poverty.
The yesteryear actress Anju Mahendru delved into Smriti’s lack of income.
She said: “Her married life started off very well as she got married to SD Narang.
“But the end was not good. There was no money.
“Narang Sahab had properties all over India. He had a huge bungalow at JVPD with a swimming pool.
“[Smriti’s sons] signed blank contracts. Now, they are staying in one room that is also their elder sister’s house.
“[Smriti] was not in her senses because she was 100. But this is a tragic end.
“I spoke to her in February on her birthday. She was not really there.”
“One thing I have to say is to invest correctly, you can live till and you can go at the age of 100.
“So you have to have that kind of income.”
Smriti Biswas celebrated her centenary birthday on February 17, 2024.
She is survived by her two sons Rajeev and Satyajeet.
