“Gulmohar explores how the past trickles into the present"

Veteran actress Sushama Sarker is stepping back into the spotlight with Gulmohar, a new web series premiering on May 15, 2025.

The project, directed by Syed Ahmed Shawki, marks the first time the seasoned performer and the acclaimed filmmaker are working together.

With a career spanning stage, television, and cinema, Sarker’s return is being eagerly anticipated.

In Gulmohar, Sarker plays Rehnuma, a character deeply woven into a story centred on family, legacy, and hidden emotional terrain.

The title refers to the name of the family home where the story unfolds, anchoring both the physical and emotional landscape of the series.

Set within the walls of this house, the drama follows a family of four siblings.

It shows their relationships and the dynamics that evolve between them and their mother, played by Sara Zaker.

While the show carries a subtle air of mystery, Sarker insists that it is, at heart, a human story.

In an interview, she said: “Every family has its own layers. Love, legacy, greed, history, these elements shape who we become.

Gulmohar explores how the past trickles into the present, and what we do with the weight of that inheritance.”

According to the actress, preparation for the role was intense.

Sarker spent a month in rehearsal before shooting began. Filming took place in an old house on the outskirts of Dhaka over a span of nearly a month.

Her scenes were completed over ten days, but she said the emotional weight of the character lingered long after the shoot wrapped.

She shared: “Rehnuma stayed with me. It took time to return to myself.”

The actress had glowing praise for director Syed Ahmed Shawki.

Known for his nuanced storytelling, Shawki brought a distinctive vision to Gulmohar.

Sarker said: “He’s thoughtful, sharp, and understands actors deeply.

“He gave me the space I needed and pushed me at just the right moments.”

Behind the scenes, she called the production one of the most professional teams she has worked with in years.

That support, she believes, helped her deliver one of the most emotionally complex performances of her career.

As Gulmohar prepares to stream, Sarker leaves viewers with one request:

“Watch it with your heart. There’s beauty in the quiet moments, and something to take home by the end.”

The series offers a layered look into generational tensions and the bonds that persist through them.

For fans of meaningful dramas, Gulmohar promises a story that lingers.
