The Romances and Love Affairs of Deepika Padukone

Despite her many breakups over the years, it seems Deepika Padukone has finally found love again with her marriage to Ranveer Singh.

The much-loved actress, who appeared on the ramp for the very first time at the tender age of 17 began her career in Bollywood in 2007.

Since then, her talents have brought her much fame and her career has seen an upward boom.

She has had an unprecedented amount of success when it comes to her film career. From her first debut film, Om Shanti Om (2007) opposite the king himself, Shahrukh Khan, to others like, Love Aaj Kal (2009), Housefull (2010), Cocktail (2012), the romantic comedy, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) and then blockbusters like Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013) and Padmavaat (2018), she has grown tremendously.

Deepika even starred with Vin Deisel in the Hollywood film xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017).

But what about her romances and love affairs before settling down to the love of her life Ranveer Singh?

Well, it’s not uncommon for Bollywood stars to keep their love affairs tightly zipped, and it certainly isn’t unusual to see the media grab on to any hints of soaring romances.

So, let’s find out more about the romances of Deepika Padukone before she married Ranveer Singh in Italy.

Nihar Pandya

Deepika is known for her many rumoured romances in the past, which have not always gone according to plan, such as Nihar Pandya, her first lover during her modelling days. The young couple met at an acting institute in Mumbai in 2005.

Their relationship was steady and lasted 3 and a half years. She lived with his parent’s for 3 years, but he was left heartbroken when she left him as her fame rose in Bollywood.

Despite the fact they ended their relationship, they are still in contact with each other, and it seems he is still her backbone whenever she needs a friend.

She stated:

“I am not commenting on my past, I am in touch with Nihar and his parents. His parents have taken care of me and treated me like family.”

Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni

After Nihar, Deepika swiftly moved on to more successful men, like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh. Speculation suggests that both were used for her own needs as her fame grew.

Though Yuvraj was more domineering and was over-possessive of her, the relationship was put to an end by Yuvi. It’s said they maintained their friendship after they broke up.

Yuvraj went onto marry Hazel Keech after having been on a few dates too including Kim Sharma.

It’s said that India’s cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was very smitten with Deepika in 2007. 

He had requested SRK for a special screening of Om Shanti Om in order to be with her. He also invited Deepika to a T20 match where Deepika cheered India playing against Australia.

In those days, Dhoni had long hair and sources say he cut off his locks because Deepika did not like men with long hair at the time!

Ranbir Kapoor

After her stints with India’s cricketers, Deepika moved on with Ranbir Kapoor.

Deepika and Ranbir had been the talk of B-town as he was a big part of her life when they started dating in March 2008.

In November 2009 they had a high profile break up. With the media attention at its peak, she went back to her ex-Nihar Pandya, and from then on she decided to keep her personal life away from the press.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani saw the ex-lovers, Ranbir and Deepika reunite, which did not seem to be an issue for any of them. She didn’t need a lot of convincing when she was offered the film as she said she had ‘blind faith’ in the director.

Questions were raised about whether they really thought it over, acting alongside each other again considering they once had a very public love affair. Dippy insisted during film promotions that none of it was planned – whether it was their dating, break up or what film they do next.

Ranbir also agreed. When it was announced that they were going to play alongside each other, he was asked if it would be awkward to work together. He responded saying the whole concept didn’t make sense to him.

In an exclusive Gupshup with DESIblitz, Ranbir said:

“When Deepika and me broke up, we never lost touch. We maintained a friendship and I think we’ll maintain that all our lives.”

“So I think it’s a bit over-hyped, especially by the media.

“It’s actually better. We understand each other better. We talk more now. We are more free with each other and we had an amazing time working on this film.”

They both stated that they are not too concerned in what they are doing as they are both focused on their careers. They have been friends for a long time, and previous love history doesn’t change anything.

Deepika also pointed out: “Of course it’s different to know a friend and then to know him in the work or set capacity it’s different. But that’s it.”

Siddharth Mallya

But it seems the fairytale love story will always be with Deepika. After reportedly dating Siddharth Mallaya in 2010 they broke up their unconfirmed 2-year relationship in 2012. Rumours suggest that it was because Deepika had signed a film with ex-beau Ranbir which Siddharth wasn’t too happy with.

Ranveer Singh

Rumours of Ranveer and Deepika’s relationship began to flare up in 2013.

They were seen on a dinner date together.

To escape any unsolicited paparazzi attention, they both left separately, Ranveer leaving from the front exit whilst Deepika exited from the back. It was said that they had planned to leave separately without being seen.

In February 2013, she revealed that she gets too involved when she is in a relationship, referring to rumours of her and Ranveer Singh:

“I don’t know how to be with someone and not be attached.” 

She also stated how wonderful a person he is and that he can make someone feel like the most important person in the world.

However, the spark between the two flourished and led to their marriage, finalising the romances and love affairs of Deepika Padukone.
