"It’s a story of identities."
Studiocanal and Working Title Films have released a first-look image from the upcoming cross-cultural British romantic comedy What’s Love Got To Do With It?
Directed by Shekhar Kapur and written by Jemima Goldsmith, the rom-com is set to release in UK cinemas sometime in 2022.
Set between London and South Asia, the first-look image from the film features stars Shazad Latif and Lily James.
The What’s Love Got To Do With It? cast also includes Sajal Aly, Shabana Azmi, Asim Chaudhry, Mim Shaikh, Iman Boujelouah, Mariam Haque, Sindhu Vee, Emma Thompson and Jeff Mirza.
The rom-com film follows documentary filmmaker Zoe, played by Lily James, for whom swiping right to find Mr Right has only delivered bad dates and funny anecdotes, much to her opinionated mother Cath’s dismay.
For her childhood friend and neighbour Kazim, played by Shazad Latif, the answer is to follow his parent’s example and opt for an arranged marriage with a bride from Pakistan.
As Zoe films Kazim’s hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a different approach to finding love.
British-Pakistani chart-topping music producer Shahid Khan, known by his stage name Naughty Boy, will bring his production and writing skills to the film.
The worldwide star and legendary Qawwali singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has also recorded two songs, one of which is titled ‘Mahi Sohna’, for the rom-com’s soundtrack.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will also make an appearance in the film itself.
Pakistani actress Sajal Aly recently shared the first look of her character from the sets of the film.
In the photo, Sajal Aly could be seen wearing an eastern ensemble, with a headpiece and black henna, while a hairstylist curls her hair.
The Mom actress, who is a fan of old songs, captioned the picture:
“Aisay na mujahy tum daikho!”
Speaking about the film, director Shekhar Kapur said:
“It’s a story of identities.
“It’s about cultural clashes and it’s a comedy, but it’s about hiding behind identity and how identities can become tribal, and how tribalism can lead to clashes and fundamentalism.
“It’s a rom-com, but based on this fundamental idea of people adopting identities out of fear of marginalisation.”
The rom-com film is produced by Jemima Goldsmith and her Instinct Productions with producer Nicky Kentish Barnes alongside Working Title Films’ Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan.
