"I apologise to those who got offended by it."

Ranbir Kapoor issued an apology for his comments about Alia Bhatt’s pregnancy weight gain.

He made the comment during a YouTube Live session as part of Brahmastra promotions.

The session included Alia and the film’s director Ayan Mukerji.

During the session, the stars spoke about why they are not promoting Brahmastra in the way that they usually do for other films.

Alia explained: “We will do it (promote the film extensively). If you are asking why we are not phailod (spreading) everywhere… right now our focus is…”

Her husband interrupted and said: “Well, I can see somebody has phailod.”

Ranbir also looked at her stomach, shocking Alia.

Ranbir immediately told her it was a joke and while Alia did not take the comment to heart, social media users were angry.

Many called Ranbir insensitive for making fun of his wife’s weight gain.

It also led social media users to point out Ranbir’s behaviour with co-stars, accusing him of being toxic.

A lot of videos showing him interrupting Katrina Kaif in interviews were shared.

An interview where Ranbir publicly outed Anushka Sharma’s anxiety battles and called her an “anxiety queen” also resurfaced.

The wave of criticism has now led Ranbir to issue an apology.

Ranbir was in Chennai to promote Brahmastra when he was asked about the ‘phailod’ comment he made towards Alia.

He apologised to those who were offended by it. Ranbir also revealed that he spoke to Alia about it later and she laughed it off.

He said: “Firstly, I love my wife with everything I have in my life.

“It’s a joke that didn’t turn out to be funny. It wasn’t my intention. I spoke to Alia about it later and she laughed it off.

“My sense of humour falls flat on my face sometimes. I apologise to those who got offended by it.”

The apology received a mixed response. While some said it was necessary, others felt he had no reason to apologise.

One person wrote: “Honestly he has absolutely no reason to apologise.

“It was a joke which people know but just because they want to target him it was taken out of proportion.

“Still he apologised showing his grounded and humble self. We love Ranbir Kapoor.”

Another said: He did need to apologise.

“It was a tasteless ‘joke’. You don’t ‘joke’ about the changes and discomfort your wife’s body is going through every day!

“Being a real man means treating her like a queen in thoughts, words and deeds for the miracle she is giving him. Time to grow up.”

Brahmastra marks Ranbir and Alia’s first time on-screen together and it will release on September 9, 2022.
