The Punjab government has announced a lifetime ban on theatre performers, particularly actresses found guilty of promoting obscenity during stage performances.

This decisive step is part of a broader initiative to restore family-friendly entertainment in the Pakistani province and tackle growing concerns about vulgarity in theatres.

Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Zahid Bukhari shared the announcement during a meeting with theatre owners.

The minister emphasised that theatres promoting indecent content would face strict repercussions, including license revocations.

The Punjab Arts Council has been instructed to secure formal undertakings from theatre owners.

They will be required to pledge to avoid hosting obscene performances.

This includes female stage actresses provocatively dancing, obscene language and immoral actions.

Previously sealed theatres will only reopen upon compliance with these commitments.

Minister Azma Bukhari highlighted Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision to transform Punjab’s theatres into cultural spaces.

This ban aims to create an environment where families can enjoy meaningful entertainment.

She stressed the importance of dramas addressing social issues and inspiring the public.

Bukhari also warned that theatres failing to comply would face fines and potential closure.

This crackdown follows a history of government action against theatres accused of hosting vulgar performances.

In 2023, the caretaker government under Mohsin Naqvi launched an anti-obscenity drive, sealing over ten theatres.

Theatres in cities like Lahore, Sheikhupura, and Kasur were shut down for violating the Dramatic Performances Act of 1876.

Despite subsequent legal interventions that led to the reopening of some theatres, the government’s stance on enforcing decency in stage performances remains firm.

The Punjab government has also introduced legislative measures to modernise regulations.

In 2024, amendments to the Dramatic Performances Act of 1876 transferred administrative authority from the Home Department to the Information and Culture Department.

This shift aimed to streamline the regulation of theatre scripts, performance monitoring, and disciplinary actions, which was overseen by the newly formed Punjab Theatrical Performance Ordinance 2023.

The government’s recent decisions include launching an advisory committee tasked with ensuring commercial theatre plays remain family-friendly.

Azma Bukhari hoped that these efforts would revive Punjab’s theatrical legacy.

With these measures, the Punjab government aims to safeguard the integrity of stage performances while fostering a positive environment for audiences.

Theatres are now under scrutiny to ensure compliance with the new directives, marking a significant shift in the cultural landscape of Punjab.
