A Pakistani woman has been arrested for trying to smuggle a large number of iPhones to avoid tax. The customs officials arrested her at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was caught with 23 iPhone 15 Pro Max devices. They were approximately valued at a staggering Rs. 9.2 million (£25,800).

The incident occurred when she had chosen to go through the “green channel”. This is meant for travellers who don’t have any goods to declare.

However, her responses to the customs officials were odd, raising concerns among the authorities.

The customs officials became suspicious of her and decided to scan her luggage, which revealed empty boxes of mobile phones.

Subsequently, officials thoroughly searched the woman.

It led to the discovery of all 23 iPhones, which were attached to her body.

The search also revealed that she was not only smuggling iPhones but there were also graphic cards found on her.

Even though the confiscated iPhones amounted to Rs. 9.2 million, the additional duty tax of Rs. 4.3 million (£12,000) was applicable.

The woman was trying to avoid that, hence she was immediately arrested, and the mobile phones were seized as evidence.

The police want this incident to be a reminder of the efforts to combat smuggling and illegal activities at airports.

The customs officials were told to be cautious at all times to prevent people from smuggling contraband.

Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the extent of the smuggling operation. It remains to be investigated whether the woman was acting alone or as part of a larger network.

The case will be thoroughly examined, and appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved.

The authorities said it is crucial for individuals to abide by the law and refrain from engaging in smuggling activities. These not only undermine the economy but also pose a threat to national security.

After this incident, security is being enhanced in order to prevent such activities from occurring in the future.

Police say this could be a major threat to Pakistan’s economy as hundreds of iPhones are smuggled every other day. It is important to note that only a few of them get caught.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has also taken notice of this and is launching a crackdown against smugglers.
