A police investigation is underway after a Pakistani swimmer was shot dead near his home.

The incident happened in the Dhok Faryal area of Jatli, Rawalpindi.

The victim was identified as 23-year-old Mohammad Mustafa Awan, a national swimming champion in the Pakistani Army.

It was reported that Mohammad had been on holiday.

He exited his house at 11:30 am on January 11, 2022, and was standing nearby talking on his phone.

Suddenly, an unidentified man appeared and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

A passerby discovered Mohammad’s body half an hour later and informed the police.

Officers arrived at the scene and transported the victim’s body to a local hospital for an autopsy.

A case was registered and an investigation was launched.

City Police Officer Sajid Kayani directed sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Gujjar Khan to probe the case from different angles and arrest the culprits immediately.

The top official also said that “those involved in the incident will be arrested and brought to justice”.

Police say that the reason behind the shooting is yet to be determined.

Officers stated that they are looking into all possible angles.

Mohammad Najeeb Jarral, a resident of the neighbouring village Nirali, said that Mohammad worked in the Pakistan Army.

He also participated in various swimming competitions at a national level.

He said that the swimmer won three gold and a silver medal whilst representing the Pakistan Army at the 57th National Swimming Competition in Lahore.

Mr Najeeb said that the victim had also taken part in the FINA World Swimming Championships, held in Abu Dhabi in December 2021, securing fifth place.

He added: “He learned swimming with us in Nirali Dam in his childhood and was always ambitious to win international medals by representing Pakistan in international championships.”

It was reported that whenever he was on holiday, the victim visited his hometown.

Inspector General of Punjab Police Rao Sardar Ali Khan also directed the Rawalpindi police to immediately arrest the suspects and bring them to justice.

The suspect currently remains on the run.

This is not the first time that a Pakistani official has been murdered.

In October 2021, an employee of an intelligence agency was shot dead by armed robbers near his home in Karachi.

The suspects had just committed a robbery near a textile factory and were fleeing when they encountered Muhammad Jamil.

They tried to rob him but when he resisted, they opened fire.
