The announcement comes amid rising traffic-related casualties
The Sindh government in Pakistan has introduced a new initiative to empower women by offering free ‘pink scooters’ through a lottery system.
This announcement was made by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon during a press conference in Karachi.
The scheme aims to enhance mobility for female commuters in the province.
To participate in the lottery, women must possess a valid driving license.
Memon emphasised that the lucky draw will be conducted at an open event, ensuring transparency in the selection process.
This initiative builds on the provincial government’s previous launch of the ‘Pink Bus’ service, which caters specifically to female passengers.
In addition to the pink scooters scheme, Memon revealed plans to introduce a ‘pink taxi’ service featuring female drivers.
These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to promote women’s independence and provide safer transportation options in Sindh.
The minister also announced that all vehicles in the province would now be registered under a unified system.
This decision aims to streamline vehicle registration processes, addressing some of the administrative challenges faced by commuters.
The announcement comes amid rising traffic-related casualties in Karachi.
Reports indicate that over 130 people have died and more than 1,800 have been injured in road accidents in 2025 so far.
This is concerning especially since there were nearly 500 fatalities recorded in 2024.
The surge in accidents has led to public protests, with angry mobs setting vehicles involved in crashes on fire.
In response to these safety concerns, Memon revealed that the Sindh government has formed a committee to address road safety issues.
He noted that proceeds from the auctioning of number plates would be allocated to the provincial government.
They will use those funds to enhance traffic management and safety measures.
Additionally, Memon criticised the federal government for failing to fulfil promises regarding public transport.
He pointed out that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had pledged 180 buses for Karachi, but none were included in the 2025 federal budget.
Memon stated:
“We will write a letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to fulfil his promise.”
Furthermore, the Sindh cabinet has approved the establishment of the Dow Science Foundation and sanctioned additional buses for the province.
The cabinet also approved vital infrastructure projects, including the K-IV water project for Keenjhar Lake and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Line project.
These initiatives reflect the Sindh government’s commitment to improving transportation and safety for its residents, particularly women.
