Afridi’s death has sent a wave of grief

Former federal minister and senator Abbas Afridi has passed away following severe burn injuries caused by a suspected gas leak explosion.

The incident occurred at his residence on the evening of June 5, 2025, in the Azim Bagh area of Kohat.

Afridi and three others were critically injured by the severe blast.

Initially treated at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Kohat, Abbas Afridi was later transferred to the Burn Centre in Kharian for specialised care. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

His body was flown back to Kohat the same day. The police confirmed the incident.

They also said the three others injured, identified as Dilnawaz, Javed Afridi, and Nadeem, are currently receiving treatment at the Divisional Headquarters Hospital.

Afridi’s death has sent a wave of grief across Pakistan’s political landscape.

A senior figure in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), he hailed from a well-known political family.

His brother, Amjad Afridi, is also a former Member of the Provincial Assembly.

He serves as the Pakistan Peoples Party’s provincial information secretary. His father, Senator Shamim Afridi, is also a veteran politician.

The funeral prayers for Abbas Afridi took place at 5 pm on June 7, 2025, in Babri Banda, Kohat.

Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Karim Kundi, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.

Offering condolences to the family, he said: “We all share the same sorrow with them in this hour of grief.”

Kundi also instructed authorities to investigate the exact cause of the blast and ensure a transparent inquiry.

Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Deputy Chairman Zahid Khan also mourned Afridi’s death.

Both remembered him as a warm, sociable, and dedicated public servant, saying:

“He was a sociable and sincere person.”

Social media users also expressed their sadness and condolences on his death.

A user said: “May Allah ease his family’s pain and grant him Jannah.”

Another wrote: “Black day for Kohat.”

The nation now mourns not just a political figure, but a man known for his accessibility and grounded presence in his constituency.

As investigations continue, his passing marks a sombre moment for both his party and the people he served.
