"Things would go missing and then we would wonder"

There are very few Bollywood horror films that make it big at the box office, as it is a specialist genre. Though, Amavas (2019) is an action horror thriller, which is hoping to make an impact with the fans.

The movie was originally meant to release on January 11, 2019.

The producers of the film did not want it to clash with The Accident Prime Minister (2019). There are also reports that the post-production and visual effects were cause for the delay.

Hence, the film will now hit the theatres on February 8, 2019. The film stars Nargis Fakhri (Ahaana) and Sachiin Joshi (Karan) in key roles.

Fakhri will feature in a horror film for the first time and is making somewhat of a comeback. Thus, it will be fascinating to see her in a different light.

Whereas Jackpot (2013) actor Joshi has done horror films in the past. Mona Singh (Dr Shivani) and Ali Asgar (Butler), two experienced actors from the small screen will play supporting characters.

Posters and teaser of Amavas released earlier, creating much anticipation for the film.

Ahead of the release, DESIblitz rounds up key aspects to the film, including cast and crew, concept and posters and trailer:

Cast and Crew

Amavas - Cast & Crew

American born Pakistani-Czech actress Nargis Fakhri plays the lead role in the film. Fakhri has several fearful moments in the film.

Sachiin Joshi plays the lead hero in the film. Joshi will create some fear with his character in the film.

TV actress Mona Singh famous for her role in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin (2016) also has a pivotal role in the movie.

Equally important is TV-film actor and stand-up comedian Ali Asgar.

Amavas is a direction of Bhushan Patel of Ragini MMS (2014) and Alone (2015)  fame. He was also the director of 1920: The Evil Returns (2012).

Despite Patel also being a cinematographer, this duty will be taken care of by Amarjeet Singh.

The filmmakers did research into ghost hunting and paranormal activities, especially in the night. Using science and technology, the team did go about collecting evidence for the film.

The crew has put in a lot of effort into the film. Explaining the reason why the film had to face delay, Patel earlier told the media saying:

“We are trying to achieve top-class VFX and that is little time-consuming.

“We do not want to release the film haphazardly and want to ensure that the end product is up to the mark.”

Whilst MR Shahjahan is the producer of the film, the music is by Sanjeev-Darshan, Ankit Tiwari, Abhijit Vaghnani and Asad Khan.

The cast and crew shot the film in London on a 40-day schedule from start to finish.

Often the good is victorious over the evil. However, there are times also when darkness overcomes the light – This is Amavas, which literally means new moon night.

The film revolves around a couple played by Nargis Fakhri and Sachiin Joshi. The film will possibly highlight and flashback something important from the past.

One of the actors will, unfortunately, allow an evil soul to take revenge and take possession.

This film has a few scenes, which will get people jumping in fear.

The hero will do everything to save his love in the film. The film apparently will end on a happy note.

The movie is apparently supposed to be quite different from other horror films.

Talking about the upcoming horror film, Joshi told the media:

“Amavas is a horror film. It is not a cliché horror film as audiences usually expect the same type of scripts.

“But Amavas is quite different, particularly the story, screenplay, technology and effects.”

Not many know that the castle where the shooting of the film took place is really haunted.

Speaking about this, Fakhri mentions:

“We had to stay in the castle. We had our little rooms, separate rooms. Things would go missing and then we would wonder like whose taking these random silly things for makeup.

“And then day or two later we’d find it later rolling on the floor.”

There will also be a few songs in the film to go with the concept and background.

To mark the occasion of Halloween, the first poster was unveiled in October 2018. The poster with a red and black look seems scary and mysterious.

A second poster, indicating the new release date came out on January 5, 2019. The new poster showing the lead pair is very dark.

Trailer and Story

Amavas - Trailer

The trailer of the film begins with the romantic track, ‘Jab Se Mera Dil,’ sung by Armaan Malik and Palak Muchhal.

In the background, dialogues of Mona Singh are quite thrilling. She says:

“Truth is not always something that you can see.”

Then an old castle is visible, showing Nargis Fakhri and Sachiin Joshi shifting there. Ali Asgar,  the caretaker of this place is not present at the time when they arrive.

Fakhri accidentally allows an evil force to unleash. Everything is normal until one-day Joshi has to leave for somewhere

During that time the evil soul comes to haunt Nargis. Dialogues by Singh will continually scare some people, reflecting how bad this frightening soul is.

We can also see Sachiin having bad nightmares, implying he has done something wrong. It is as if the evil soul has come to take revenge.

There are a few scary scenes in the trailer. These include the hands of the evil soul covering the face of Fakhri, sounds coming from the door and a covered statute looking towards the back.

Near the end, there are quite a few multiple shots, showing Mona coming to help Nargis.

During this period, Nargis is in a dangerous situation.

The evil soul is most powerful on the new moon night. The evil soul then possesses Joshi as he tries to fight it to save his love.

Fakhri will be hoping this film does well, especially with 5 Weddings (2018) failing to make an impression.

While the jury is out, the film seems to have all the typical masalas of a horror film made by the famous Ramsay family.

Barring films like Raaz (2002), horror films only do well to a certain degree. This could be down to quality or a lack of promotion.

There is always the potential for a film like Amavas to do well. Having said that people do tend to prefer films, with a big director and top actors.

If horror fans want Bollywood to make more films of this genre, it is important that they flock to the cinema houses when the film releases.

Amavas releases on February 8, 2019, with fans hoping that it will live up to their expectations.

Amavas is a Viking Media Entertainment presentation and will be distributed by Blue Sapphire Films in the UK.
