"Legend for a reason."

Kapil Dev has inspired a flood of memes after mimicking Ranveer Singh in a now-viral advertisement.

The former Indian cricketer, known for his cool demeanour, channels the Bollywood actor’s eccentric personality.

Singh plays Dev in the upcoming biographical sports film, 83, which he will star in with his wife Deepika Padukone.

The ex-Indian team captain tweeted the ad showing him in an array of vibrant outfits, like those donned by the actor.

He added the caption: “Heads, I’m fashionable. Tails, I’m still fashionable.”

In the 38-second video for Indian financial technology company CRED, Dev is seen running around a cricket pitch acting erratically.

Netizens were highly amused by the ad and responded in their droves.

One person asked: “Should Ranveer Singh leave his job now?”

Another person commented: “Looks like Kapil Dev is going to do Ranveer Singh’s biopic.”

Someone else agreed: “Kapil Dev released Ranveer’s biopic before Ranveer could release Kapil Dev’s biopic.

“Legend for a reason.”

Others shared memes inspired by the ad:

This is not the first time that CRED has released an advert featuring sports stars.

CRED previously shared one called ‘Rahul Dravid with anger issues’, starring the former Indian cricketer and team captain.

Another called ‘Neeraj Chopra in every role’ featured the Olympic gold medal javelin thrower.

Now, they have combined sports with Bollywood, two of the country’s greatest passions.

The film ‘83 takes its name from when Dev led India to victory as team captain in the 1983 Cricket World Cup against the West Indies.

Directed by Kabir Khan, the movie was set to be released on Friday, April 10, 2020, but had to be pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is now set to release on December 24, 2021.

Kapil Dev was the greatest fast pace bowler in Indian history.

He is also the only cricketer to have scored over 5,000 runs and taken more than 400 wickets in Test cricket.

Dev was also a hard-hitting middle-order batsman who was named Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002 by cricketing publication, Wisden.

On Thursday, March 11, 2010, the former team captain was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.

Kapil Dev, who is also an avid golfer, recently said he believes India can become a major golf capital, with new courses popping up throughout the country.
