Jaya Bachchan has questioned why more Indian women are wearing western clothes.

The veteran actress appeared on the podcast What The Hell Navya, alongside her daughter Shweta Bachchan and granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda.

The most recent podcast’s theme was ‘One Crown, Many Shoes’.

During the podcast, Jaya asked both Shweta and Navya:

“Why is it, I want to ask you both, that Indian women are wearing more western clothes?”

Navya replied: “I don’t know.”

Jaya added: “I’m just asking.”

Shweta gave her thoughts. She said:

“I think it’s because of ease of movement. It’s easier to move around.

“A lot of women are now just not just at home, they are going out, they are getting jobs.

“It is easier to pull on a pair of pants and a T-shirt or a shirt than it is to maybe drape a saree.”

Disagreeing with Shweta’s explanation, Jaya Bachchan believed that trousers are wrongly giving women the label ‘manpower’, instead of the more suitable ‘woman-power’.

She said: “I feel what has happened is very unknowingly, we’ve accepted that the western clothing is more… it gives that manpower to a woman.

“I would love to see a woman in a womanpower.

“I’m not saying go wear a saree that’s just an example but I think in the west also women always dressed in dresses.

“This whole thing much later in life where they also started also wearing pants.”

Shweta Bachchan further described the history of the industrial revolution to explain why dress wear has historically changed for women:

“With the industrial revolution, when all the men went to war, women started working in factories and they had to wear pants because you could not do all the heavy machinery work…”

Navya gave her opinion by mentioning women who are CEOs of companies and businesses, who also wear sarees.

Jaya rebutted and said the reason for this is because they are “self-made and are confident in their skin”.

Jaya Bachchan isn’t afraid to voice her opinions.

She has previously discussed romances, her problem with filming during menstruation, and other anecdotes from her famous career in the film industry in the podcast.

The actress’ next film appearance will be in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, which also stars Dharmendra, Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh.

The film is to release on April 28, 2023.
