Is a Sequel to ‘Ghajini’ on the Way?

Aamir Khan’s Ghajini was one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema in 2008.

The film was directed by AR Murugadoss, presented by Allu Aravind, and was co-produced by Madhu Mantena.

Ghajini was, in turn, a remake of Murugadoss’ 2005 Tamil film of the same name.

Like the original movie, the Hindi version told the story of Sanjay Singhania (Aamir).

Sanjay plans to kill the titular murderer of his girlfriend, Kalpana Shetty (Asin).

In a premise inspired by Momento (2000), Sanjay suffers from short-term memory loss and, as a result, cannot remember anything for longer than 15 minutes.

He must therefore, use photographs and tattoos that will lead him to his prey.

Upon release in 2008, Ghajini was a massive success and became the first Bollywood film to cross Rs 100 crores domestically.

Sources have reported that the makers could be planning a sequel to the classic film.

Pinkvilla stated: “[Aamir] has asked Allu Aravind, Madhu Mantena, and the entire team to come up with a worthy subject for Ghajini 2.

“If that’s locked, he might go on to create history by doing a sequel to the first Rs 100 crore film of Indian cinema.

“Madhu and his team are brainstorming ideas for Ghajini 2 and will pitch it to Aamir.

“Aamir is awaiting the first draft of Ghajini 2 [as well].”

Interestingly, the climax of the 2008 film was written by Aamir.

The project also marked the first time the actor underwent a notable physical transformation for a role.

However, users on Reddit did not seem too enthusiastic about the prospect of a sequel.

One person wrote: “Some movies should be left alone before ruining their legacies.”

Another user said: “So Aamir is now turning to commercial films? God, he was the only one doing original films.”

A third comment read: “AR Murugadoss tried to pitch a sequel of the Tamil original to Suriya as well but the talks went nowhere.

“Same will happen here. What scope is there for a sequel? The plot is finished.”

In recent months, this is not the only Aamir Khan classic for which an extension has been reported. 

In March 2024, Aamir confirmed that Rajkumar Santoshi was working on a sequel to Andaz Apna Apna (1994).

In a Q&A with fans, Aamir announced: “I’ve just recently found out that Rajkumar Santoshi is working on Andaz Apna Apna 2. 

“The news is quite new. I think all of us will enjoy watching the film.”

Meanwhile, on the work front, Aamir Khan will next be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par.

He has also produced the upcoming Lahore 1947, which is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi.

It stars the likes of Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, and Karan Deol.
