"I will pull their ear or slap them"
A group led by a student’s parents stripped a teacher naked and assaulted her for disciplining a girl in West Bengal’s South Dinajpur.
On July 22, 2022, a group led by the student’s parents held a protest outside the headmaster’s office in Trimohini Pratap Chandra High School.
According to reports, the teacher slapped the girl for not attending classes earlier in the week.
The group then allegedly entered the teachers’ common room and assaulted the teacher and stripped her naked.
The mob abused the teacher by using obscene language.
A police team rushed to the school after receiving information about the incident.
Later, the situation was mediated by the school teachers’ block administration with an assurance of security.
Police arrested four people for assaulting teachers on July 24, 2022, hours after a complaint was lodged by the school authorities with the Hili police station.
The incident sparked a political row.
BJP MP and state president, Sukanta Majumder, visited the area and met the agitators. He demanded strict police action against those who assaulted the teachers.
BJP youth wing’s state vice-president Tarunjyoti Tewari took to Twitter to share a video of the incident. He urged the state police to take action against it.

The incident sparked outrage among the locals. They held protests and blocked roads on July 23, 2022.
BJP state president and MP Sukanta Majumder also held a protest meeting.
He said: “I was a teacher once. We also disciplined many students. To a teacher, a student is his or her student only.
“As the teacher touched the student’s ear, her religious attire, hijab, dropped. This resulted in the incident.”
Seeking justice for the teacher, the BJP leader said: “The girl’s family along with two hundred people attacked the school.
“And the police didn’t have any courage to lodge a case. Only when locals held the protest and blocked the roads, police lodged an FIR against 35 persons.”
The teacher said: “If students behave improperly in class and if they remain inattentive, I will pull their ear or slap them in order to discipline them at times.
“That day, I slapped the girl. But such an incident has never happened before.
“We feel a lack of protection now. How will we control the school comprising 2,000 students?”
Headmaster of the school, Kamal Kumar Jain, said: “We are ready to consult with the locals.
“I stand with the teachers of the school and I even feel a lack of protection. What happened was not expected.
“I called the BDO the other day. We will sit at a table with all representatives.”
