"We were very happy he got a work permit, finally."
An Indian student was shot dead inside his car in Canada’s South Vancouver.
In a statement, Vancouver Police said 24-year-old Chirag Antil was found dead inside a vehicle in the area after neighbours reported hearing gunshots.
Police said: “Officers were called to East 55th Avenue and Main Street around 11 pm on April 12 after residents heard the sound of gunshots.
“Chirag Antil, 24, was found deceased inside a vehicle in the area. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.”
On April 13, India’s Consulate in Vancouver tweeted:
“It has learnt with great sorrow the shooting and killing of an Indian national, Mr Chirag Antil, living in Vancouver.”
The victim’s brother Ronit said his brother seemed happy when they spoke on the phone that morning.
It was reported that Chirag left his home in his Audi. Unknown assailants then shot him.
Ronit said: “We spoke on the phone to the policeman who gave us this information, but we are not being told anything as to how this happened.
“We want to appeal to PM Modi and Jaishankar for justice.”
His father, Mahavir Antil, said the family had high expectations from their son but now they are devastated.
He said: “We were very happy he got a work permit, finally.”
The National Students’ Union of India chief Varun Choudhary requested the Ministry of External Affairs to assist the student’s family.
He said: “Urgent attention regarding the murder of Chirag Antil, an Indian student in Vancouver, Canada.
“We urge the Ministry of External Affairs to closely monitor the progress of the investigation and ensure that justice is swiftly served.
“Additionally, we request the ministry to extend all necessary support and assistance to the family of the deceased during this difficult time.”
The victim’s family is reportedly raising money via GoFundMe to help bring his body back to his home in Haryana.
Ronit added that his brother was a kind-hearted person.
He said: “My brother and I had a great relationship.
“We used to talk every day, day and night. I spoke to him last before the accident happened.”
“He was kind of happy, he never had any issues or fights with anyone, ever. He was an extremely polite person.”
Chirag moved to Vancouver in September 2022 to study.
He just completed his MBA at University Canada West in British Columbia and had recently obtained his work permit.
