A police case has been registered after a 30-year-old Indian man was killed by five men as he tried to save his mother who was being beaten by them.

The incident happened in Amritsar, Punjab, on November 22, 2019. The victim was identified as Manga Singh.

While it has been said that the attack was over an old dispute, one of the attackers believed that Manga’s brother had been having an affair with his wife.

The accused are related to the victim. The suspects were identified as Sukhdev Singh and his sons Sukhwinder Singh, alias Sonu and Vijay. Mukhtiyar Singh and his son Polish were also accused.

Sonu suspected that Kashmir Singh was having an affair with his wife as they had not been seen for several days.

The five men acted on their suspicions by beating Manga’s mother and their relative Sarabjit Kaur.

On the morning of the incident, Sarabjit had gone out of the house only to be confronted by her relatives. They dragged her by her hair and brutally beat her.

Another relative witnessed the assault and ran into the house to explain what was going on.

After hearing the news, Manga ran out to save his mother followed by his wife.

As he tried to help his mother, Sonu stabbed the Indian man in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. The men then proceeded to beat Manga as he lay on the ground.

When his wife raised an alarm, the five suspects fled the scene.

Aman, the victim’s wife, explained: “At around 9:30 am on Friday when my mother-in-law Sarabjit Kaur went outside the house, the accused started thrashing her over some old family dispute.

“As soon as my husband rushed to save his mother, Sukhwinder attacked him on the head with a dagger while others started beating him up.”

“When we raised an alarm, the accused flew from the spot. My husband received injuries on his head. We rushed to a local hospital where doctors referred him to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH), Amritsar.”

Manga later died of his injuries. A case was not registered until November 24, 2019, as the family had not filed a complaint.

Aman and the victim had two sons, aged four and six.

Police officers have said that Manga was attacked with a dagger when he tried to save his mother who was being beaten by the accused.

The five suspects remain on the run, however, SHO Amolak Singh stated that raids are being conducted.

He said: “We have started an investigation. The families had an old rivalry.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the victim’s younger brother, Kashmir Singh, has illicit relations with Sonu’s wife.”

“Both are at large.”

A case has been registered against five accused under Sections 302 (punishment for murder), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
