An Indian man has been jailed for life after he confessed to raping, murdering and burying a 17-year-old girl.

The case came to a conclusion on February 3, 2020, after the 22-year-old admitted to the crime and was sentenced. The victim had been missing from the Punjab village of Kohala since December 22, 2019.

Rajbir Singh Raja had been in a relationship with Sandeep Kaur for two years.

However, he began suspecting that she was having an affair with another person.

Raja revealed that he was told about Sandeep’s alleged affair two days before he killed her. The murder happened when he was pressured into marriage.

He explained: “Initially I asked her not to talk to me, but on December 22, I called her up after seeing her missed call and we decided to meet here.”

They met near her home and Sandeep started pressuring Raja into marrying her.

Raja did not want to get married but Sandeep continued. In a fit of rage, Raja raped his lover before hitting her with a brick and strangling her.

“In a fit of rage, I hit her on the head with a brick and later strangulated her to death.”

Raja added that he dug a shallow grave and buried Sandeep’s body before returning home.

Sandeep’s family filed a missing persons’ complaint on December 25. As she was a minor, police registered a case of kidnapping.

Based on information from the victim’s family, another man was initially arrested but was later released without charge.

After looking into Sandeep’s call history, Raja was taken into custody where he confessed to the murder.

The Indian man even offered to show officers where he had buried the body. Raja dug up the body in the presence of several police officers and villagers.

Sandeep’s body was sent for a post-mortem which confirmed that she had been raped before she was killed.

Paramjit Kaur identified her daughter by the clothes and rings she was wearing.

While Raja remained in custody, prosecutors demanded the death penalty.

At a court in Jalandhar, Additional Sessions Judge Mandeep Kaur sentenced Raja to life imprisonment as well as a Rs. 50,000 (£540) fine for the rape and murder of Sandeep Kaur.

He received life in prison for rape and murder, seven years for kidnapping and three years for acquittal of evidence, to run concurrently.

If Raja fails to pay the fine, he will receive an additional six months in prison.
