An Indian taekwondo player was shot dead for allegedly refusing a marriage proposal. She was murdered at her home in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.

The victim was identified as 26-year-old Sarita while the suspect was named as Sombir Singh. It was heard that Singh arranged to meet Sarita at her house on November 12, 2019, at 4:30 am.

However, they ended up arguing over his repeated marriage proposals, which enraged him. He then shot her dead before fleeing the scene.

Bilaspur SHO Jai Prakash was alerted about the incident by a villager. He said:

“The woman was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.”

Officers explained that Sarita trained in taekwondo while the suspect was a former wrestling coach. The two had got to know each other in 2015 during training sessions and for a short time, Sarita was coached by Singh.

Sarita had just completed her Diploma in Physical Education and was looking for a job.

Her friendship with Singh grew, however, he began pressuring Sarita and her family into marriage but it was turned down.

The victim’s relatives said that she constantly refused because he pressured her and he had left his job.

They also alleged that he began stalking the Indian taekwondo player in an attempt to intimidate her.

Sarita’s mother, Savitri, revealed that the suspect had threatened her daughter if she continued refusing his marriage proposals. She said:

“My daughter had met Sombir in Rohtak during a sports event five years ago. Since then he had been troubling my daughter and used to follow her wherever she went for competition.

“My daughter was a national-level taekwondo player and represented the state four times.”

He acted on his threat when a row over his refused proposals led to him killing her.

Forensic expert Deepak Mathur explained that the close-range shot resulted in excessive bleeding. He said:

“There was one entry and exit point on the chest. She was shot from a close range.”

Police revealed that Singh had estranged relations with his family. He also had previous assault cases registered against him.

A case of murder was registered by police based on the statements given by Sarita’s parents. Officers also pointed out that Sarita had filed a complaint against Singh in the past. An investigating officer said:

“Our initial investigations have revealed that the deceased and the suspect knew each other for a long time.

“It has also come to our notice that the deceased had filed a complaint against the suspect. Our team is now investigating the case from every angle. We will soon be able to make headway in the case.”

Police are searching for the whereabouts of Singh, who currently remains on the run.
