Mukesh called Santosh and told him that his sister was dead.

Several in-laws have been arrested for murdering their daughter-in-law at their home in Latehar, Jharkhand.

It was reported that they killed her for failing to give them a car as dowry.

The victim’s brother, Santosh Gupta, explained that 23-year-old Anju Devi got married in 2018 to a man named Mukesh Kumar Gupta in a traditional ceremony.

The couple also has a seven-month-old son.

Santosh said that a few days after the wedding, the in-laws started telling Anju to give them a car as dowry. They also beat her in an attempt to get what they wanted.

Santosh revealed that the car was a request on top of the dowry that was already given to the family.

He said that during the marriage, jewellery and money which totalled Rs. 8 Lakh (£8,500) was already given as dowry.

Mukesh and his sister Rinki Gupta used to repeatedly call Santosh to tell him to convince his sister to give them a car.

Anju was told about what was going on. In a bid to stop the in-laws from harassing Santosh’s family, Rs. 50,000 (£530) was handed over.

However, one day, Mukesh called Santosh and told him that his sister was dead.

Santosh and his family became nervous and went to the house, but no one was there.

Locals informed the family that Anju was taken to the Primary Health Centre. When they reached the medical centre, Santosh saw his sister’s body in a car but the in-laws were nowhere to be seen.

The police were called and they sent Anju’s body for a post-mortem. Following the post-mortem, the body was handed over to her family.

Santosh and his family stated that Anju was killed by her in-laws for not providing them with a car.

Following their statement to police, a case was registered against Mukesh Gupta, father-in-law Shambhu Prasad Gupta, sister-in-law Rinki Gupta and the mother-in-law.

The four family members were booked for dowry murder at Herhanj Police Station.

Station in-charge Jagdev Pahan Tirkey confirmed that a case was registered based on a statement given by the deceased’s brother.

Officers have arrested Mukesh while another relative was also detained.

Police are currently searching for the whereabouts of the other family members as they have gone on the run.

They stated that the investigation is ongoing and the suspects will not be spared once they have been arrested.
