An Indian father has been sentenced to four years in prison for telling his daughter to commit indecent acts and for trying to gamble her away.
In addition, he was also fined Rs. 10,000 (£115) by a court in Haryana.
The unnamed man was a resident of Yamunanagar.
His crimes came to light in 2019 when his wife went to the police. She told officers that her husband was an alcoholic.
Whenever he got drunk, he would beat their children. Their daughter was in the ninth grade.
On February 27, the woman had gone out to run some errands, however, when she returned, she found her daughter crying.
When she asked what was wrong, the girl revealed that her father told her to commit indecent acts.
She also told her mother that her father had molested her and had even tried forcing her to sleep with him.
On the same day, the Indian father took her to Jagadhri where he took part in gambling.
When he ran out of money, the man said that he would bet his daughter.
Hearing of his intention, the girl ran home where her mother later found her.
The woman went to the police and explained her daughter’s ordeal.
Based on the complaint, officers at Chhapar Police Station registered a case under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The man was eventually arrested and brought before the court.
In March 2020, he was convicted and jailed for four years. He was also fined Rs. 10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional sentence.
In an equally horrifying case, a man gambled his wife and lost. He then allowed his friend and a relative to gang-rape her.
The woman told the police that her husband’s friend Arun and relative Anil regularly visited her home to drink and gamble.
The victim claimed that her husband was an alcoholic and had put her at stake while gambling. After he lost, he let his friends gang-rape her.
The woman’s lawyer, Khitiz Tiwari, said: “The woman came to me and told me that her husband is an alcohol addict.
“Once after running out of money, he bet her in gambling and allowed one friend and a relative to rape her.
“To save herself from this misery, she went back to her maternal home. But later her husband came and pleaded that he will mend his ways and requested her to come back.
“However, on the return journey itself the vehicle was stopped midway and she was again raped by her husband’s associates.”
Police registered a case and searched for the three men, who went on the run.
