An Indian couple from Uttarakhand refused to accept a baby girl as their own and insisted that they had become parents to a boy.

A DNA test took place and found that the girl was, in fact, their child.

The child was born on March 5, 2019, but the dispute only came to an end in April 2019.

A DNA test was ordered after Usha Negi, the chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, intervened in the matter.

The girl lived with her biological parents as they waited for the DNA outcome to arrive. Negi told Aarti Shah to feed the baby girl until they find out the outcome.

Negi fought for the DNA procedure to take place after finding out that Shah, from Dehradun City, had disowned the newborn child. The woman thought she actually gave birth to a boy.

Following the birth, she did not feed her child at the government-run Doon hospital where she was born. Shah continuously refused to accept that she gave birth to a girl.

She claimed that she actually gave birth to a boy but he was swapped with a girl by the hospital authorities.

Coincidentally, a baby boy was also born on the same day to a woman also called Aarti, which was the cause of the confusion.

After she was handed the baby girl, Shah and her husband lodged a complaint in the hospital.

They claimed that they should be given custody of the boy as it was their child. However, the parents of the boy refused to believe their claim.

Reports of the couple’s refusal to believe that the child was theirs and the dispute between the two sets of parents began to circulate.

This resulted in Negi intervening in the matter and calling for a series of DNA tests to find out the truth.

Two weeks after both children were born, blood samples of the two infants and their parents were taken and sent for forensic testing at a laboratory.

The DNA reports returned to the hospital on Thursday, April 18, 2019, and it proved that Shah was the mother of the baby girl.

On April 19, 2019, Negi confirmed that the girl was the biological daughter of Aarti Shah.

Negi said: “The baby girl is with her biological parents only. Moral of the story, all’s well that ends well.”
