"She had decided the time has come."
Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) will be leaving ITV’s Coronation Street after 11 years on the soap.
The show has now confirmed how the character will exit the Street.
As Yasmeen’s granddaughter Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) prepares for big changes, Alya will find herself legally defending a perpetrator of coercive control.
Given how her grandmother was previously married to the villainous Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew), Alya’s morals will be tested.
Wanting a bit more normalcy in her life, Alya requests her boyfriend Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) for her old job back.
Meanwhile, in Coronation Street, Yasmeen will tell Alya that she has been offered a job in London, where she would be working for a charity.
Yasmeen reveals her intentions to sell her share in Speed Daal and move away, but how will Alya react?
Shelley’s exit from Coronation Street was announced in January 2025. A soap insider said:
“Shelley spoke to producers early last year and advised that after 10 years on the show and being involved in many major storylines during the past decade she had decided the time has come for her to explore other opportunities.”
Yasmeen arrived on the cobbles on the arm of her first husband Sharif Nazir (Marc Anwar).
However, their long-standing marriage fell apart when it emerged that Sharif was having an affair with Yasmeen’s friend Sonia Rahman (Sudha Bhuchar).
Yasmeen went on to marry Geoff, but he soon turned out to be abusive, often exhibiting physical and mental control over Yasmeen.
When asked if Yasmeen had accepted she was a victim of abuse, Shelley said in an interview:
“I think it’s a rollercoaster because even when the words ‘not guilty’ came out of her mouth she was doubting herself because of her history.
“She has huge self-doubt, and a lot of women in her situation do have that.”
“Because historically, they believe themselves to have made bad decisions in their lives, they have a repetitive strain of abuse.
“She continually says to Alya, ‘He’s a complicated man, you don’t understand him’.
“And the second thing that she says to Alya, which she brings up to her many, many times is, ‘I did it. Whatever he did, I had no right to treat him in the way that I did. I had no right. Whatever he did, I should not have done what I did’.”
Shelley King will depart Coronation Street as Yasmeen Nazir in upcoming episodes.
