"It was taking me over. It was controlling me."

Honey Singh has opened up about one of the darkest and most private chapters of his life in a deeply emotional recent interview.

Speaking on the ABTalks podcast, the singer revealed that in 2019, he reached a point where he pleaded with God to take his life.

The confession offers a raw and deeply personal window into the years he spent away from the spotlight at the height of his fame.

At one point in 2014, Honey Singh was one of the biggest names in Indian music and seemed completely untouchable professionally.

That year, he released his album Desi Kalakaar, judged the reality show India’s Raw Star and toured alongside Shah Rukh Khan.

He also acted in the Punjabi film Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22, adding yet another dimension to an already extraordinary career.

But beneath all of that dazzling and relentless success, something deeply serious was beginning to take hold of him.

“I was Yo Yo Honey Singh, the biggest superstar of India at that time.

“But then I got symptoms of bipolar disorder.”

What followed was a period of complete and almost total isolation.

He locked himself in a room, stopped speaking to people and cut himself off from television, radio, the internet and all media entirely.

Singh recalled: “I was not even speaking.”

He also addressed his battle with substance abuse, admitting:

“I didn’t know it was taking me over. It was controlling me.”

During this time, his family encouraged him to turn towards faith and spirituality in the hope that it might offer him some relief.

He revealed: “I used to think I was the one who made Yo Yo Honey Singh. I was the one who did everything.”

The pivotal moment that would eventually change everything came one night in 2019 when he reached what he describes as his absolute lowest point.

Having been an atheist for years, he found himself suddenly turning towards a God he had long dismissed and beginning to speak to him.

He apologised for not believing and told God:

“Now, whoever you are, however you look, I’m going to start respecting you because I want something from you.

“I was done with myself. That night, I asked for death.”

“I didn’t get death. I got the purpose to live.”

A change in medication and a new doctor played a crucial role in helping him find stability after years of struggling.

He described the doctor as “an angel” in his life, crediting the treatment alongside reflection and faith for his slow return to himself.

Singh said: “When I became a believer, my life changed.”

He was careful to clarify, however, that bipolar disorder remains a permanent part of his life.

“I’m still a patient of bipolar disorder. But God has been kind. I’m travelling the world, doing shows again, and making music. It’s a miracle.”

Since his return, Honey Singh has released projects including Honey Singh 3.0, Glory and 51 Glorious Days and continues his ongoing My Story World Tour.
