Has ‘Animal’ copied ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’?

The teaser for Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Animal’ was met with mixed reviews, mainly due to claims that it looks similar to ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’.

"Why does it seem like Maula Jatt?”

Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal is facing claims that it has copied the Pakistani blockbuster The Legend of Maula Jatt.

The teaser showed Ranbir as a cold-blooded assassin as well as a blend of genres.

But some netizens have pointed out similarities between the Bollywood film and Fawad Khan’s hit.

From the attire to the long hair and visible scars, Ranbir appears to have replicated Fawad’s Maula Jatt look.

Even the poster looks similar to The Legend of Maula Jatt‘s.

Pakistani social media users were not happy with the alleged copying of The Legend of Maula Jatt.

One Twitter user asked: “Just saw the teaser of Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal. Why does it seem like Maula Jatt?”

Another wrote: “Animal teaser is a copy of Pakistani movie The Legend of Maula Jatt teaser.”

A third said: “Ranbir Kapoor’s movie looks like a version of Pakistan’s The Legend of Maula Jatt.”

Pointing out the axe, a netizen said:

“Is it a reach to say Ranbir’s look in Animal’s teaser looks exactly like Fawad’s in Maula Jatt, especially the gandasa?”

One Indian film enthusiast laughed off the comparisons, writing:

“I think the director would not even know about Legend of Maula Jatt.”

This prompted one Pakistani netizen to respond:

“Oh really? Ranbir himself praised Maula Jatt. Furthermore, TLOMJ Is the highest-grossing Punjabi film internationally and when we talk about the UK, it has collected more than any Ranbir Kapoor film.”

The Legend of Maula Jatt is not the only film that the Animal teaser has been likened to.

The teaser featured an intense fight sequence between Ranbir and a group of axe-wielding goons. Ranbir takes out a few baddies in a brutal fashion while others flee in fear.

The action sequence reminded viewers of a scene from the 2003 Korean classic Oldboy.

Many pointed out the similarities between the two scenes, accusing director Sandeep Reddy Vanga of blatantly ripping off the scene.

A social media user wrote: “Ranbir Kapoor is full with RAGE but director Sandeep Reddy Vanga seems to copy the Oldboy action sequence for the teaser.”

Another said:

Animal pre-teaser is just a pre-teaser of Oldboy hallway fight scene.”

A third agreed: “Nothing original about the Animal pre-teaser copied from Oldboy movie. Unfortunately, Sandeep Vanga too copied.”

Since the pre-teaser release, Animal has been embroiled in controversy, with veteran lyricist Sameer Anjaan criticising the makers for not mentioning the lyricist or composer on the poster.

He said: “I am feeling so bad and shameful, that it has come to this stage.

“I don’t know who the lyricist of the film’s songs is, but I don’t know why they are not fighting and keeping silent.

“It has to be done jointly, one person won’t be able to.

“I remember Nadeem-Shravan and me putting it in our agreements when we worked together, that no poster will be released without our name on it.

“I don’t know why the director and producer don’t think it’s important to mention the composer and lyricist’s name.”

Meanwhile, Animal will be released on August 11, 2023, the same date as Heart of Stone, which stars Ranbir’s wife Alia Bhatt.
